Electrical question

I purchased my car in June, and the battery it came with died two weeks ago. I put in another used battery that I borrowed from a friends shop while a new one from the dealership was in the mail. The one from the dealership arrived today, and on the way to the shop, after making a stop for a few hours, the borrowed battery was also dead. I just replaced it in the parking lot ( I was going back to return the borrowed battery).
There I hooked it up to a voltage tester with the car running and I got a reading of 13.45, with the car running that did not change much with the lights on. The car also runs fine with the negative side of the battery unhooked.
Did I just have 2 bad used batteries? Could it be a problem with the alternator or some other component in the elec system? My car is a 1989 cab.

-Chris

Have you measured current drain to the battery with the car off? You may have a trunk light, etc. that's stuck on draining the battery. Your measured voltage with the car running is not bad. Ideal is 13.8 volts, but 13.45 is still OK. DO NOT run your car with the battery disconnected! That's a sure fire way to ruin your alternator!
