Value of a 7 R case
 

I'm in the process of thinking through a new engine for Phoenix based on a 7R case and am wondering what I should expect to pay for a 73 7R case in good condition? Any ideas?

I've posted my thoughts on the engine, on the engine rebuilding board and was hoping to get your thoughts on what I shoud expect to pay for the case (also, this much more active and I have a short window of opportunity).

Seems to me $500 is fair. Search the parts board, that's what I do to find a price for something. Wayne made some statements on 7R cases, so search under his name as well.

a 2.4T 7R case just sold for $475 on the for sale & wanted board. That should give you an idea.

I’ve found a lot of info in the archives, but am still slightly confused as to what a 7R case really is. Would a ’74 2.7l have a 7R case? I’m looking at an early car w/ a rebuilt ’74 2.7 & am trying to work out what potential for the future this engine would have.

7R refers to the end of the casting number which reflects the revision level of the casting. 7R represents the highest level of development of the magnesium engine case. In modern lingo, it'd be "Mag case 7.0".

There were two variants of the 7R mag case; the 84mm spigot bore for the last of the 2.4 engines in mid/late 1973, and the 90mm spigot bore of the 73+ 2.7 motors.

All 2.7 mag motors were 7R, but not all 2.4 motors were 7R!

As I understand it, there are 2 different 7R cases. The 73.5 7R case used in latest of the 2.4 ltr engines and the 74+ 7R case used in the 2.7s. The 73.5 is rare and is the best of the 2.4 cases. A 2.7 7R case is pretty easy to find.
Someone with more knowledge might give a more complete answer.

I had a 74 2.7 engine in a 71 911T awhile ago. It was a 7R case. Says right on the bottom of the motor. Bring a flashlight when you inspect the donor car.

There's one for sale on ebay right now, ending in a couple of hours. Not mine.

I was bidding on that one and trying to guage how high I should go w/o tipping my hand to a board full of Porschephiles (sorry guys, I need a 7R as a base to fix issues caused by MM. I hope I didn't offend anyone).

Over $600 + shipping just seemed a bit high to me. As my rebuild is not immenent, I'll keep looking and run the risk of paying more later. This case would have been perfect as the car is a 73.5.

Ohh well, on with the hunt...
