Urgent help re: VIN & Engine Decode
I have found a nice 1972 911T for sale, but there is some confusion from the owner as to whether it is a 70 or 72.
DVLA (in England) have the logbook as 1970, but it is on a 'J' plate for 1972. Owner believes it is a 2.4 MFI engine. Vin is 9110123348 Engine is 6231343 Any help to identify what it really is most appreciated. What other differences can I look for to distinguish between a 1970 and 1972.

The engine should be a 73 911E 2.4 w/ MFI.
The car is a 70T Karmann coupe.

Thank you,
Pardon my ignorance, but what is a Karmann Coupe ? Does it refer to Karmann (as in manufacturer / designer) ? It looks as though the car had an engine change at some time, so I will get back to the owner and see if he has any more documentation. Is the 1973 MFI the engine that was replaced with the CIS unit (USA only) from middle 1973 - 140bhp ? Thanks very much.

The 1973 1/2 911T was the first CIS car.

Ian - some of the early 911's were assembled by Karmann as opposed to Porsche but I don't think there are any significant differences.
The engine in this car (2.4 E) is a mechanically fuel-injected unit which was originally rated at 165 bhp @ 6200 rpm. It was the 2.4 T engine that was replaced by the 2.4 CIS version in January 1973. Incidentally the easiest way to identify a 1972 model is by the oil filler flap on the top of the osr wing just behind the os door - this was the only model year to feature this. Andy

Thanks for clearing that one up.
Having read many of the pelican stories relating to pre 74 cars, I am on the lookout for a 72/73E to import to the UK, so any information / leads welcome.

Ian - you may be better off opting for a '72 model since (at the moment) this will be eligible for 5% VAT on import to the UK whereas a '73 model may not (& will therefore be rated @ 17.5% - this is on the purchase price+shipping cost).

Stijn - cars built up to the end of 1972 are classified as 'historic' in the UK.

awch.. that's pretty strict ...
over here anything older than 25 years is historic even my 77 924 is tax free (was the biggest reason for buying the crapper ... it saves me 1000 euros a year on tax and insurance) 125 euros in total for insurance, no taxes whatsover...no requirement for second car or not... i can spend a grand on repairs . and still come out break even even if it does run rich and bad milage...it's still not a bad deal considering a second hand ford escort or similar will set you back a minimum of 1500 something euros in road tax+insurance
