Run just premuffler
 

Thinking about this on the trip back and forth to the "swap meet" in Indiana. 3 hours each way...
how loud would my car be if I just ran the euro pre muffler with a short extension out to the bumper? I can't seem to find an exhaust I like. Currently, I have the stock Bischoff in place.

Hanging just the premuffler off of the heat exchangers puts tons of stress on the heat exchangers and will eventually break them. Remember that when the muffler is installed both ends of the cat/premuffler are rigidly supported. With just a cat and extension the car is very, very loud when you are on the gas, but not too bad when you are tooling around. A Premuffler would probably be even louder. It sounds really awesome though. Sounds like an old racecar. If you are going to do that then your extension needs to have something welded on that will somehow bolt to the body or the stock muffler support area. THat's why cars with megaphones use those brackets that run between the 2 megaphones and bolt to the back of the engine. Having to remove and replace a broken exhaust sucks!

I've tried it, it's loud but bearable for the distances I've driven......none of which was anywhere near 3 hours. I probably wouldn't do it for such a long drive, but your car will sound badass and we'll hear you coming :)

Thanks. i had already figured to make a bracket of sorts to support the setup. I guess it can't hurt to try it and then I can always throw a Flaumeister on if needed. Just trying to get a particular sound without spending a fortune.

I think fabspeed makes a pipe just for thet need. It's calle dsomething like a cup pipe. It has a small angle down on it. I think its like 9 inches long

If you just bolt an extension pipe directly to the cat without any muffler
will it adversely affect the cat in any way? I'm assuming that one would
support the extension pipe to the chassis. What I'm really wondering
is whether the lack of any backpressure load from a muffler will harm
the cat...?

You got the name right, but it's actually a pipe that bolts to the wastegate on the 911 Turbo (pre 993). It's not for naturally aspirated 911s.

Actually Fabspeed makes what they call a muffler bypass that's on their site in the 911SC/Carrera section just for this, not for turbos. They are where I first got the idea about 3 years ago, they first produced a limited run, then quite a while later they stuck it up on their site. I think they charge $50, but I could be wrong.

I ran mine for quite a while and the cat was fine. Actually right before I sold the car I had to get it inspected, it passed with flying colors.

Well, I took the muffler off tonight. holy crap, it's loud! My wife came out to the garage and gave me "the look".
I used to have an 11 second Camaro with flowmasters and 3" pipes and big ol'cam, sounded good but I don't want the Pcar that obnoxious.
I am thinking a muffler will be going on this weekend.
On the plus side, the bolts came out with just a bit of grinding.

Hey guys. Found a muffler I am going to install Saturday. Flo-Pro.
Found them in a local speed shop. Built just like the Flowmaster but half the price. I got the setup for Camaro/Firebird muffler with one inlet and dual outs. I will have one outlet capped off and run the outlet in the stock location. i hooked it up briefly tonight and it has a DEEP rumble at idle but not really loud. I will try to post a video when I get it done.
