10mm RIP

Tightening my turbo's air cleaner and just had my 10mm box end slip out of my hand and impossibly thread its way down to the very bowels of the engine. Of course it doesn't hit the floor, and by the sound I'd say it's on the red plastic fan shroud somewhere. I cannot see it, and blindly fishing with the magnet turned up nothing.
May it rest in peace and never rattle or fall out in front of a crowd.

Use a dental mirror to see if you can locate it. You may need one of the those 3 fingered gizmos to grab it. I say this, because you don't want to buy a bastard wrench do you?

BTW, I left a 9mm on a VW muffler a while back. That one is on the road somewhere or in someone's tire.

That's added weight. Now, go lose one in the front to balance things out.

Sounds like a good reason for an engine drop.

gsxr,

I sure hope it doesn't rattle its' way down to the crank pulley/console mount area ... could sure mangle a pulley, break your belts ... and deprive the engine of cooling air in a few milliseconds time! How closely do you monitor the alternator warning lamp???

If you don't find the wayward wrench ... it may be time to install a BIG alternator warning lamp ... like one of these from CB Performance: http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1118

before i DIY'd. i used to get some nice snap-on tools just fishing around my trucks engine compartment. i have a 18" 3/8th extension that really comes in handy. got it free, from behind the AC condensor.

gixxerken, i would go on a fishing trip and find that sucker. like warren said, you dont want it traveling on a path of destruction. get the mirror on a stick and start poking around.

more MIA than RIP.

Drive up a steep hill, I recovered a lost piece that way once when it worked its way back out into the open.

I should add that I looked in vain for that nut and gave up on it. If you think it might end up in the fan/belt area, proceed carefully. I think in my case the nut slid off the top off the shroud and over to the side near the left valve cover.
