Engine Bay Restoration (pics)

Hi All

This is my work for this week whilst I wait to complete my engine...

I began by removing all paint because I really wasn't sure of what was under it and figured that if there was a problem, I'd like to know. Turned out to be nothing but solid metal

Next came a thorough cleaning with prepsol and a rust preventative brushed into all the nooks and crannies... And on to a nice smooth coat of etching surface primer. I followed that up with a light texture coat similar to what was originally there before another well thinned shot of primer surfacer...

Finally I built up two light coats of colour and finished it with a nice "wet" top coat... Damn I love this colour

This has all been done in 2-pac

Here's the engine starting to look like an engine. Can't wait to get it in! I've had a lot more powder-coated this time around, and I am super happy with the results. The fan has just been done in powder-coat silver and I had the strap (and a few other things) chromed.

I'm spewing that all this is taking so long as I'm going to miss this years club concourse where I think I might have been able to pick up the "***** thats a nice Porsche" trophy. We're very informal down here

Cheers

Fantastic result, John!

That thing's going to be a little pearler (Hoges) when it's done.

Hey Bones, the only problem with that engine bay and motor is that I would not drive the car for fear of getting even a spec of dirt in there. Great job.

John, excellent DIY work! Just a small suggestion. In the future use painters paper instead of newspaper which has fibers that will end up in your paint. Also make sure you are using the 3M painting masking tape which comes off much easier than regular masking tape.

lol.....I know what you mean but I'd never own a garage queen - not that there is anything wrong in that - I'm hoping to put many more miles on the engine shortly. Then I start on the suspension!

BTW, where'd you get the fan mounting strap powder coated black. And how'd you get the finish on the fan so nice. I just yanked motor out to upgrade the p/c and the fan is just sittin there waiting to be done up.

Thanks in advance,

Daryl

wow!

John !
this is a very nice job !
nice color too !
sorry i don't want to be negative !
but why you don't removed your rubber seal before painting ,it is easy to remove and install after painting,
on mine i find a little surface rust into the groove for the rubber,

but it will be a great result !
this is my engine

Keep the Sporto faith Bones

Kurt, thanks for the tip.... I know now where you are coming from. I didn't have any fibre problems, but the masking tape was a nightmare, nothing but 3M next time!

Daryl, I actually had the fan strap chromed. The fan and surround has been in done in silver powdercoat. I'm in Australia, but I know you've got some great powdercoaters over there.

Raynald, your engine bay looks great! Just how I want mine to look. The reason I painted the rubber was that I have brand new rubber seals to go in so I didn't see the point of masking the old ones

So, is this going to become the "ultimate engine bay" thread??

Nice work... Here are my two... The second one will be getting a similar treatment as yours soon...
