what parts are worth?
i need help!!! my 79 sc targa had an electical fire. it seemed to be in the alt. area but everything on top of the motor is gone. the long block looks fine, there is some heat damage on the alt. stand area, but other than that is fine. i am just going to cut my loses and part out the whole car starting with the motor. my question is what is it worth? should i sell heads, pistons, crank, block, flywheel, ect.? or should i just sell it whole? any input would be great. thanks

You probably are best off just selling the engine as a whole.
If you part it you probably will end up with a lot of parts you don't need unless you are going to use a similar engine.

I offered 750-1000 for an unknown entity...........So you know, I overhauled my son's SC with 136K and although the engine held decent oil pressure before disassembly I had the crank (that looked ok) magnifluxed and it turned up some fatigue cracks in the last main. A used crank set me back $850 plus shipping so my point is........with high miles and a ("rebuild?") your is an unknown entity. Consider as well that your piston/cylinders, camshafts, rockers, rocker shafts ( and those parts are just the tip of the iceberg) are all in question as well. I am not gun shy just aware of the cost of a proper rebuild. Good luck with your resale.
Thanks, Erick |

On this board, you need to wait out the turkeys. They all crowd in at once trying to find the garage sale prices of the century. They sneek up and hit recently widowed little old women with baseball bats, throw them a few dollars, and run with parts that are well worth $20.
You can find some people who will pay more for your motor, but you arn't a parts business, so the price you get quoted from a wreckers is much higher because most have to stand behind their sale (if they don't, you could sick the BBB after them). I've seen SC long blocks go from $1000 to $2000 (consider the state i'm in too), and thats reasonable. Good luck, Don. PS, Evil Bay works great, i know a guy that sold a used chain for $25... some people.

Do some searches in the used parts forum. This would probabyl yield some good bacground info to help you with pricing.

Try looking at ebay to get an idea of market prices for the parts on your car. You can also do searches in the pelican classifieds to get idea of prices. You will get more money by parting it out but there's also the hassle factor of taking it all apart.
As a prior poster revealed, the crank alone is worth $850 to some people. If the intake and FI are OK, they are worth about $300. Heads could go for $250. Wheels could go for $800. Alum trailing arms are $250. Front fenders if good are $150 each. Tranny is probably $350 to $500. Front hard oil lines are about $250. Again, you needs to decide if you want to deal with parting the thing out. Felmir
