variocam on non variocam engine

has anybody seen this guy

http://www.928sg.com/heads.htm

he took a 928 , and wacked on 968 heads, with Variocam on it

just an idea, but , how feasable would it be to wack on 911 Variocam heads on an older engine?

- more low end torque
- no more valve adjustments

dunno what else comes into play on this... anybody else has an idea? what kind and amount of improvements to expect?

um, not feasible. 996 heads on air cooled bottom would be really super hard. GT3 heads and cylinders on an air cooled case would probably be feasible (definitely with 964+ case), but then you have a GT3 engine anyway.

956 heads on our engines would also be possible (not variocam), but $$$

in all cases you need water cooling in the car.

I guess the question is, why would you want to?

Note that the 928 and 944/968 engines share many parts, not the same relationship as 911/996.

didn't 993's have variocam as well??
those are still aircooled

don't know about size of heads or anything else though

why would i want to? dunno , just theorizing about what can or can't be done , not even sure if i'de ever do it...

maybe the advantage of vario cam is just 1% more torque
dunno .. there must be some use for the design if they keep using it on the new cars?

993s have varioRAM, not varioCAM.

It would take some enterprising and inventive person to add a mechanism onto the sprocket end of the cam to automatically advance/retard the timing. I think it's been done on 924/944 engines (?) and several domestic big blocks.

Variocam though is variable lift too. That would require some nifty re-engineering of the rocker arm/cam housing and camshaft lobes.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound disparaging; I like all kinds of different ideas. It's just that between an air cooled engine and a non-GT3 engine like _nothing_ would line up.

WRT to the variocam there is lots you can do with an air cooled motor that does more for power/torque. the new motors have the old ones beat on power/economy etc but what are you gonna do?

I just read the site and he actually modified his 928 heads to take a 968 variocam cam-to-cam chain tensioner. Just want to be clear so others don't think you can slap 2 968 heads on a 928 (well, maybe you can, but this guy didn't).
