Another what's it worth post (early 911)

Hi,

I'm not sure if I am the right owner for my car. I don't drive it work and only drive on sunny weekend days. I really like early 911s but I just don't drive it enough. And when I do drive the car it is to go driving rather than running around town to take care of daily projects. I think a more modern Porsche would better fit my lifestyle (gasp), perhaps a 993. I just bought a new used boat so having two Porsches just isn't possible at this point.

I realize that you only get a fraction of what you put into project cars....but with that said I wonder how much I could sell my car for. I also wonder if I could set it to a european buyer. With the value of the dollar the shipping expense might be worth it to the right person. If that makes sense then I would advertise the car differently.

Anyway the car is a 1969 911E targa with a rebuilt 3.0 motor, late 901 trans, PMOs, HPX ignition and a bunch of receipts.

Also, what is the best way to sell? Of course the internet, but what about Panorama, Hemmings, Collectorcar, PML, etc? Anywhere else?

Chuck

Chuck,
your car looks awesome! Is there any rust? Is the paint original or the original color? Suspension setup?
I would guess, if its rustfree, between 13-18k. Hard to say as since the engine isn't original the fact its an 'E' doesn't matter anymore. It just sounds like a very fun car.

Hey thanks. I would describe the car as "nearly rust free." Floor pan is solid and I've applied POR-15 where necessary. It is the original color, I believe a body panel or two has been resprayed. I have the certificate of authenticity from Porsche but obviously that doesn't matter. Car was originally a sportomatic, when I bought it a 901 5 speed had been installed. Since it was no longer numbers matching I did the motor swap. I have $10K in the motor rebuild, carbs, exhaust, ignition alone. Car is running 14" fuchs (ewww!) bilstein shocks and front sway bar (rear not installed). S brakes, strut tower bar, new axles, new clutch. Yes, it is a hoot to drive on nice days. More power really does "wake up" these early cars.

It seems to me a more modern Porsche would fit your lifestyle better should you choose to use it for "running around town to take care of daily projects.

If you are just going to drive your Porsche when you want to "go for a drive" then you have the perfect car. ...and a targa to boot perfect to drive down to the marina or boatyard on a nice day to go use your boat ...or maintain, repair or upgrade your boat...ask me how I know about this.

...oh yeah, if you thought Porsches were expensive to maintain...well, welcome to the world of boat ownership anyway.

Oh yeah, tell me about it. I've owned boats. BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand.

I don't mind paying for Porsches but do mind not being able to use it all of the time. I drove my old 944 all of the time.

Any other opinions? Discussion about early 911 prices, especially bastard cars usually generates quite a bit of banter. Here is a motor pic.

Bump. I'm getting the itch to get different toys.

Is the early 911 market headed up or down?

NO! Thats a great car. Go out and flog it for awhile to make sure you really dont want it anymore .

I listed my 944S2 in the Pano, Pelican classifieds, Rennlist, and Autotrader. Im not sure which ad sold the car because a broker put the buyer in touch with me.

Good luck on the sale. I'll hate to see your targa go.

Sold through a broker? I like to cut those folks out of the deal if at all possible

I like the car too but the reality is that I pour money into it yet don't drive it!

Prices in PANO and Excellence seem to be high...I wonder if those cars actually sell for top dollar.

I dont know if the guy I dealt with was the actual broker or not. When I asked him where he saw the ad he said a broker told him about it. . I dont know how that stuff works.

I understand what you're saying. These cars are much funner to drive than to not drive.

The people that list in the Pano are real proud of their cars. Some of those cars sit for a while. I know my '72 did. The ads are not always up to date either. The ad for my S2 didnt make the pano until close to a month after I sold the car.

I think the Pelican classifieds are a great resource. They are real time and all the documentation a buyer would ever need can usually be found by searching for old forum posts by the seller.

And what makes you think you will not pour money into a 993 ??

Just curious,

Oh no doubt. But I would drive that car more....

I wouldn't drive the 911E to work via DC beltway rush hour traffic. With a 993 (and A/C) it would be doable.

I think about that often with my 66 here in Raleigh.

Back in Upstate NY if the 66 broke down I would just pull it over on ths side of the road and if I had to leave it I was not overly concerned that anything would happen to it.

But down here in Raleigh it may be missing a few parts before I get back to it and on a secondary road there is not a shoulder to even pull off on to leave it.

It surely makes me think twice about using it as a daily driver and heck my 66 does not even look as good as your car.

Any yes AC would be great !!!

It is something I keep contemplating the closer I get to getting it on the road.
