help with choice

Help I am looking for a new 911 and need some help and opinion. What do you like and why? I am leaning towards an SC coupe but have seen some targas that are just stunning also I look at the 3.2s and wonder if there worth the extra money is the 3.2 that much better than the 3.0 . I owned for a short time a 1977 911s until an old beater truck rear ended me, now I have cash for a replacement and will soon be parting the 77 out. What do you like????? and I live in washington so if anyone in California has one that will not pass smog due to no cat or ? e me

Oh boy, here we go again. Search for "SC vs. Carrera" and you will get all the opinions you can handle!

I like my Targa, its fun in the summer and I only drive my car in good weather. If you like the look you can save some cash getting a Targa. The 3.0 SC engines are known to be stone reliable, while I believe 3.2's had valve guide issues, just something to think about if it hasnt' been fixed on a car you're looking at.

Hey Starman, to cut through the ...icing on the cake... I think most on the board would be agreeable to the statement that, either way, 3-liter SC or 3.2 liter Carrera (with 915 or with G50 transmission), all are great cars, provided they be in good shape (or in conformity to the shape they are described to be and at the right price). The Carrera DME-managed injection is a definite "plus" in my book, though (but carry a spare $30 DME relay in your pocket, because they break).
To an alien from outside your hefty continent, a U.S. specification SC in good condition would seem to offer relatively better performance than a U.S. spec. Carrera...(but a simple chip transplant and some other small interventions can improve the Carrera to easily top the SC). (In the case of Euro-spec Carrera's, it's "no contest": the Carrera is the more rapid car (in the absolute: the gearing is "longer").
You find a very nice SC at a good price? Take it!

I own both an SC and an 88 G50 Carrera. I would not take either one over the other even though I prefer CIS. That's right, I do. So if I were to chose, I would pick the car in the best shape. Either will do.

Seeing that you live in Bummertown I would go with a coupe. You won't have to worry about leakage. In all seriousness, get the best 911 for your money. I have an 80SC, & the nice thing is that I don't have to worry about emissions anymore. I have ditched the cat & put SSIs with a sport muffler. I may ditch the CIS & get carbs, but the nice thing is that I can do whatever I please without big brother interfering.

The key is to get a good PPI before you pull the trigger on any deal. What is your price range? If you sit on your money for a while there are good deals to be had. Word has it an early moldel 930 with a rebuilt motor sold at the local swap meet last weekend for under $16k. I have a buddy that picked up a really nice 77 3liter Carrera a few months back for $8500. So if your patient, you can find a good deal. Good luck.

As well as a good PPI, I'd also recommend the old "seat-of-the-pants" test... in other words, some cars just pull harder than others, regardless of whether they are SCs or Carreras.

There are several good shops in San Diego to do a PPI;
Black Forest,
Dieters,
Porformance Porsche.
I don't know what they are charging these days.
