Paul Frere indicates that 906-001 (<i>"a 904 coupe with a six-cylinder carburettor engine"</i>) was used by the factory in May 1966 as a 'practice car' at the Targa Florio. Only one day of official practice with the actual race cars was allowed. So Porsche brought along the old 906-001 and the drivers spent many days lapping the roads of the Targa prior to official practice. Frere further indicates that the car broke a half-shaft during one of these practice runs. The 66 Targa was won by a standard Carrera 6 (906).
Also, the 904 was originally designed for the 6-cylinder 911 engine. They went with the 4 since the 6-cyl had not been adequately developed.
