the fat lady is about to sing, Cal Smog
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/asm/ab_2651-2700/ab_2683_cfa_20040804_075926_sen_comm.html
well it looks as if the california legislation has just about put the k-bosh on the 30 year rolling exemption for smog testing. if you have a 76 you are good for life, my 78 however will be subjected to smog testing unitl im old and gray. the way the state goverment keeps legislating us i may not be allowed to grow old and gray gracefully. just another brick in the wall of that moving target called "compliance". http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=ab_2683&sess=CUR&house=B&search_type=email

I'm curious as to who is behind this. Legislation doesn't just pop up out of thin air - someone is continually greasing the wheels to make this happen.

Even though I have a '69, that totally pisses me off too. We need a total change in the California legislature. The people of the State are going to have to wake up and realize a bunch of those people supposedly representing out interests really consider our tax dollars as their own to spend as their personal agendas dictate.

It says prior to 76, not 76 and prior. I was hoping 76 would at least scoot past.

Okay, the bill was until yesterday at least in the appropriations commitee. There was a hearing scheduled yesterday. The web links above don't tell the result of the hearing. After it gets out of appropriations, it may have to go through some other committee. Then it has to pass a majority vote on the floor of the senate, then it has to be signed by the govenator.
Also people with the 1976 model year cars will not be exempt (!@#$%&) if this passes. 1975 and earlier will be exempted. Just trying to clarify a few points.

They can't seem to understand the concept of attracting and keeping business in the state. This simply puts people out of work. The auto aftermarket industry is a national 26+ billion dollar industry according to SEMA. A good portion of it originates in CA.
And yet, the cars in question are in the extreme minority. It has been suggested that the owner of a '76< vehicle spends many times on his car over what the average consumer spends and uses a fraction of the gas. WTF can these idiots be thinking? They wanted to plug a hole in offshore yacht sales (no pun). CA sells millions and millions in boats anually in international waters and then parks them in Mexico for 90 days to avoid the tax. It is an estimated loss of 4 million a year to the state coffers. If they disallow this, it will be a hell of a lot more than 4 million that will leave the state. Think 10x. Can you see a trend of pencil neck thinking here? Does anyone see a larger picture, ever? No wonder businesses leave in droves. The don't need a map to find their way either. There's a light on the porch in every neighboring state. |

![]() If any CA Porsches need a good home I'll be glad to move them in for pennies on the dollar ![]() Seriously though the domestic auto industry isn't taking emissions very seriously IMO. I was at DCX Jeep-Truck the other day looking over some development SUVs - I can't believe the blatently overweight designs extra material they put on these things w/o giving it a second thought. Engineering doesn't seem to be about improving things anymore - just how much faster can they be brought to market at a lower cost ![]()

I doubt Arnold will veto this one. He's going to throw a bone to the enviros. And there's zero chance of this not passing the Senate.
By the way, Ted Costa, one of the early recall organizers, is getting ready for a petition drive to get a "part-time Legislature" ballot initiative going. Keep an eye out for the signing tables, and at least minimize the damage these jokers in the Legislature are doing.

Zeke, i couldn't agree more. I work with two local businesses, one of them is a machine shop. Its impossible these days to start a business where you don't have to fork out thousands to get approved, and our government is forking over millions to other countries to start businesses to sell products back to us!
This country we know today was created on industry, and we;re giving it all away to mexico, canada, isreal, china, and india because we want to spend less money on things, and businesses wants to make more money.

Do you guys realize that Chinense gov subsidizes the new products that their companies make so that they sell them at a huge loss. Doing this kills the market of their competition. Example, A skate deck costs 13.00 wholesale here.Just the deck mind you, no trucks, wheels etc. China can supply a complete deck delivered for $25.00. The so cal skateboard manufacturing has shriveled up. Same thing happened to snowboards and bodyboards. You can get a bodyboard for 40.00 which is less than the material costs here.

Damn first the housing, now industry and it appears that CA is going to get less water from the Colorado river pact. So much for paradise. I assume watching the ocean and women is still free?

Amen Kurt, i'm in it for the long hall. As soon as those two are gone, New Zeland here i come!
Burns, i've been told its not a loss at all. The Chinesse gov gives startup companies huge lumps of money. The largest computer assembly plant over there, has labor wages pushing an astonishing $80/month, and get this, overtime, a whopping $20-$40 more/month. They work sholder to sholder, both sides of a roller table 50ft long thats shaped like a 'U'. A completed Dell/Compaq/HP/etc computer comes off the assembly line every 30sec. Working at home out in the feilds, they will expect $20/month. I'm all for cheap interprise, but at what cost to our country. A few things are alright, but we're sending everything.
