HELP! my tranni mounts are no longer available.....

Hi all,

Well, I have a 1968 911L and desperately need a solution to replace my tranni mounts......Apparently on my car one needs to replace the entire "carrier" and that part is no longer made............

Whar are my options ?
Is there an aftermarke solution?
Can later mounts be jimmied to work?

This is my daily driver and my gearbox is really shaking......so it is causing wear and tear on my whole car.....

Thanx

SvK, I do believe this very topic came up on this board in the last month or so. Might try a search. As I recall you can use a later tranny mount, but just have to redrill the holes where it attaches to the tranny.

The latest Classic Motorsports article about their project 911e had a picture using a modified 915 trans mount with a 901 transmission.

http://www.classicmotorsports.net/

The caption said that the 915 mounted was drilled for new holes and that the transmission was drilled and tapped to install the new mount. I'm not sure about this though.

I am very curious as I'm in the same boat...by 901 trans mount is worn out and new ones are like $700.

The topic has been mentioned many times on this board, but I don't recall seeing picture or a detailed how-to procedure.

I am not a fan of drilling extra holes into the magnesium case of the early transmissions. Solid mounts have their own problems. The best thing to do would be to modify an aluminum G50 bar to fit the 901 and 1970-71 (911) transmissions - as well as the 915s. that wold give a bit of wt. savings. Even tho htis is the least worst place to be heavy in the car, a real junkie will be filled with religious fervor to shave those grams....
What I did was to make an adapter plate to link the 911 trans to a 915 support bar. The support bar is powdercoated silver (just for fun). The adapter plate is made of steel. Al would have been lighter, but steel is stronger. The regular holes you see are tapped and the support bar is bolted to it. The large "chamfers" take 12.9 grade machine screws with the slanted heads (forget what they are really called) - these screw into the tranny and the internal Allen hex on them means they sit flush so they are not in the way.
I looked up PAG's torques specs for the 911 trans in the Tech Spec Book - do that and you'll find that one set of bolts gets 16 ft-lb and the other 18 ft-lb - a distinction that is far into the "nosie" level for torque specs. As a guy who used to drive a VW buss all over dirt roads and off-road type trails, I have a paranoia of fasteners loosening, so I used the new purple Loctite (low strength) on all the threads (further muddy any torque specs). Various areas of the plate are champfered or otherwise relieved for clearance. It would also be nice to have cut off the leading diagnols on this piece.
The steel turned out to be a little too thick and the nose of the trans sits about 5 mm too high in the center tunnel hole, so check that if you make one. I forget what thickness steel I used, but the ruler gives you a good start on making your template (out of single wt. carboard or thin Al plate) to make one for youself. A Bridgeport is a handy device to have nearby (but unfortunately, I did not). If somebody wnats to make a production run of an Al modifier peice for the G50 mounts, I'd happily chuck this for those. If you are dying to know the wts. for this stuff, post here and I'll try to make time to look them up (I did weigh the adapter and support bar).

Anyway, this will give you a good start on making one and saving $700 for the new 901 bars - you can also use the club sport rubber mounts vs. stock to tune your firmness without shattering those PMO carbs. I might have put 40 hours in to this thing. With this info, you can probably cut that in half.

Pelican wouldn't let me upload pci2, so here is the adapter plate with a scale on it. Remeber - your bolt patterns may differ. Have fun.

Well, I've tried uploading 7,8 times - not sure how this will look, but finally reduced the res enough to get it to fit into the 100k Procrustian bed....

Minkoff, Should be enough info here to make one, or you can improve on the design by modifying a G50 mount. If I make one on my car it's a hobby. If I do one for you, it's work. But I'll gladly make you a copy if you pay my $300 hourly rate ....
