My first 911!!!!

I've always loved and wanted Porsches but for some reason I never bought one until three years ago. That's when I bought my silver 914. It's a really fun car to drive. But of course I wanted more power. My dream Porsche probably still is a black 914-6 with GT flares, big fat polished Fuchs, and a 3.2L flat six engine. So for the last two years I've been looking for an original black 914-6 and pondering six conversions on 4 cylinder cars.

That's when I came to my senses. For the same price that one would pay for a 3.2L conversion on a 914-4 and less than half the cost of a building 914-6 3.2L flared wonder car with a Wevo-915 transmission I bought a beautiful low mileage 3 owner 1981 911SC with 86K original miles.

I've always loved 911s so don't think I'm a 914 guy at heart. I love them both. I'm a car guy. Both cars have their strengths. The 914 was a great intro to Porsches. I've learned a lot. Lots of parts are common to both cars.

This SC was a lucky find. I think it was priced about $4-5K under market though it does need a few things. Tires are cracked. Shocks are original and tired. Records were a little spotty with the last owner. He had it for 10 years and only drove it 10,000 miles. After the inspection my mechanic truely believes that it is an orginal 86K mile car.

I had a PPI done at Heyer Performance in Mountain View, CA. Tony Heyer is awesome and really knows these cars. He spent 2.5 hours with me on the PPI and went over every square inch of the car. I learned more about 911s in 2.5 hours with him than I learned reading this board off and on for the last two years. He verified that the car has never been hit. All body panels appear original. The wear and tear on the car seem indicative of a low mileage car. The engine checked out perfect with 170-175psi in all cylinders. There are no synchro issues and the car had a clutch 20,000 miles ago.

I left the car with them for a full service because I wanted to just drive this thing and not have to immediately learn how to tune up a 911. I do all my own work on the 914 and I enjoy it but I wanted to start out fresh with new oil, tranny fluid, clutch adjustment, valve adjustement, tune-up, etc. Because I did the service, he didn't charge me for the PPI. And when I picked up the car they had vacuumed the interior. The car felt so much better after I picked it up. They really treated me well. I highly recommend them.

gorgeous car.

Thanks! It also came with the original non-whale tail engine lid so I'm probably going to switch back to that.

Shocks and tires are next. I can do shocks myself. I just need to figure out which ones.

Anthony:

Your new 911 looks great and it sounds like you got a good one for a good price! I love 914's too, but I think your new SC will do about everything your 914 did for you + some other things it would not. Enjoy your new toy.

Anthony!!!

Don't go and f@#k things up by becoming an SCWDP zealot! Seriously, that whole mindset can become less than funny at times. Count your self lucky for being able to get such a great car don't become an A$$ over it.

Don't worry, I won't become a zealot. After all I'm keeping the 914. I would have bought a black 993 Targa if I could have swung it.

Make sure to change the soft brake lines if they haven't been done in the last few years (sounds like the haven't).

Nice looking car. I think I have some SCWDP stickers around somewhere. Don't mind Mike...

Welcome to the SCWDP! Beautiful car! Shiney! I've got a sticker or 2 left if you need one. My t-shirts are too well worn to share.

that's a healthy attitude to have, anthony.

I've always said, A Porsche is a Porsche, of course, of course. A Porsche owner shouldn't dis a Porsche, of course. Unless, of course, the Porsche of course is the infamous Cayenne.

(sung to the tune of "Mr. Ed")

Don't Hate, Appreciate!!!

Great car Anthony, what a score. If you have Bilsteins & don't mind your car on jack stands for a couple weeks, you can send them back to the factory for about $260. Good as new (better if you have them custom valved). Enjoy!!!
