what kinda gaskets?
Cork? Injection molded silicone? Rubber? Head gaskets can be just steel shim plate, some are copper, others are polymer based... Your question is pretty vague.

Many are simply treated paper. Older gasket papers tended to have asbestos fibers in them.

I made a gasket out of a cereal box for my mini bike carburetor when I was a kid.

gasket material
Hey I can finally post an "expert opinion" as a gasket engineer for over 15 years, I can assure you that gasket materials are more than cardboard.
Gasket materials are designed with different rubbers, fillers and other additives depending on the fluid to be sealed, temperature environment, ..... So not all materials are the same or even close in performance. About 15 years ago most materials did contain asbestos as the binder. Those days are long gone, and the first few generations of gasket materials did NOT seal as well the the asbesots containing materials. The latest generations are VASTY improved and have leakage rates on par with the best molded rubber designs. For technical data on one of the world leaders on gasket materials, see www.sealinfo.com. I would be happy to answer any gasket related questions, and maybe able to help with some sample material for the right amount of beers. Jeff Jagusch PS, I'm sure alot of people think of gaskets as just cardboard and a necessary evil, as you learn more about the technology, it's quite interesting just like any other aspect of technology! Also, typically gaskets have been the last thing that designer thought about, so they were tailored to the existing application, we now work VERY closely with design engineers to address gasketed joint before production castings and stampings are tooled. |

Jeff, tell us a few more tidbits... esp. anything you know about 911 gaskets, torque relations, valve cover gaskets...
Thx! |
