Ideas on disguising the 993 middle rear reflector

The only styling issue that I have with the 993, is that awful center 'Porsche' reflector, that IMO is completely ugly, serves no purpose and certainly draws back from the rear lines of the car. Most of you will probably disagree.

For those that do not...What types of mods could be done to eliminate this reflector and put in a type of body colored solid reflector in its place? Any ideas?

See pics for my ideas on a more streamlined 996 style taillight look. My apologies for the bad Photochop technique.

easy- go to a graphics place, buy some gloss black adhesive film and wrap the reflector with it. make a tracing for the back up lamps and cut those sections out. You can do it in various shades of carbon fiber film too. That way if you get bored or change your mind, you can easily remove the stuff

If you delete the center reflector look... you'll make your 993 look like a 996. That's why Porsche went to so much trouble putting the center reflector back on the 996 4S but to each their own. I like trying out the temporary vinyl sticker idea.

It wont look exactly like a 996 because the tail lights are not the same...however it does add sleekness to the rear end to go with the ultimate styling of the rest of the car. I personally prefer the 996 taillight look to the 993s mainly due to this reflector. Thanks for the suggestion TRE Cup.

remember that your reverse lights are in the center reflector.

you might be able to find a faded used one for cheap, or one with a few hairline cracks or scratches, on ebay. then have a paint shop shoot it body color.
the vinyl sticker is a good idea to test the look, before committing to paint.

Porsche put the full width reflector on starting in '74.... love it or hate it.... i'm kinda neutral.

Could you paint over an adhesive vinyl covering for a perfect color match that could be reversible?

Porsche may have gone to a lot of trouble to design that rear reflector, but when Ruf offers a delete reflector option on the CTR2 it can't be that bad an idea!
Sorry i can't get the pic to upload so go here to see.....

You can paint plastic. Do it in the body color, if you like. PM me for the best primer.

Oh nevermind, it's XIM. Google it and see for yourself.

I like the rear reflector on my 86...just dont like it on the 993s. Thanks for the link to RUF. Cool how he did the cutouts for the backup lights.

here is a cool twist to the black vinyl cover: get a graphics guy to make the "porsche" lettering in reflective black- oooooh!

and btw- you can paint over the adhesive- but it is fragile and won't take much handling

You might be interested in this. It is a vinyl sticker which fits flush on the spoiler wall. My next mod! Probably worth 50HP at least.

I hate that lettering on the retractable spoilers!! Then again, I've only seen it on Boxsters and they're... well, nevermind. I'm just a hater.

Why not try some limo tint material, the darkest grade you can find. Peel it off when you get tired of it or find something better.
