Sport Mufflers & Tunnels Thru the Mountains

I finally found a sound file I recorded on the way back from Rennsport earlier this year. On the way down, Cornpanzer (70S/MFI/Sport Muffler) and I were running together late at night thru West Virginia when we came upon a long tunnel thru the mountains. I had the top off on my Targa and traffic was light ..... well, you can guess what happened next. An impromtu drag race, side-by-side, sport mufflers ablaze ..... We hit well over 100MPH (seemed like 150MPH inside that tunnel) and as we left the tunnel I was convinced my hearing was permanently damaged! Man, was that LOUD.

Well, on the way back we got split up a bit and I went thru the tunnel ahead of Cornpanzer. I had a digital recorder and flipped it on right before entering. Unfortunately, there was some traffic in the tunnel so I couldn't wind it out as much as I would have liked. I believe I'm in 3rd gear at about 5500RPMs most of the way with a couple of brief forays up to the 7300RPM redline.

Can somebody host this 1.8Mb wav file for me? Thanks. -- Curt

BTW - There's no way I will ever know for sure, but I do have hearing loss in my left ear, and am pretty sure it is attributable to driving loud p-cars and whatnot. Window-down SoCal weather, a heavy right foot, and a loud exhaust are a dangerous combination!

OK, here's the file (thanks Chris!). This was basically recorded by just holding the recorder near the open window. Ya need to crank the volume up on this.

That is a benefit of living in hilly Pittsburgh. There are tunnels everywhere. I too love the sound.

Bob - although the motor runs fine, the day has to be drawing near ....... Stoddard built my motor 25 years ago! When the time comes, I'm either going with another 2.5, except with higher compression 90mm pistons or possibly go to 92mm 2.8L RSR pistons which would result in higher compression (I think it would wind up around 9:1 compression with my heads) and 2.6 liters. These short-stroke motors are a blast. I currently have only around 7.5:1 compression, run 87 octane and it's amazing how fast this thing is. -- Curt

Curt,

I thought that thing sounded nice when I was behind you at Daytona, but this just confirms it. NICE.
