72T with 74 CIS 2.7

OK, not sure whether the PO went all CIS later fuel system stuff or not.
I pulled the tank for cleaning.

The tank has the three fitting holes straight out the back. They had the pass side one plugged and the drivers side one had the brass mesh screen behind it. The middle one had a metal line and hollow bolt like an oil line. The tank is the full spare size and seems to have a small vent line up top as well.

The pump is stillback by the trailing arm, but I don't know yet which one it is. It looks like they just plugged one of the three old mfi lines coming into the engine compartment with a screw and some rtv, neato!

Questions are, 1) If I still have the mfi fuel pump is that ok or should I change it? 2) well, the kids are interupting so we'll do that one later!

Dennis, it sounds like you have the proper MFI tank & fitting setup. Although, the I beleive the brass mesh fitting should be pass side. One should be the brass screen, the other a banjo (return line), and a plug. So that's OK

I don't think you can use an MFI transfer pump for CIS, as I think the CIS pump puts out higher pressure. A CIS expert will have to chime in...Souk, you there??

But I guess I'm confused. Are you going back to MFI??

Hi Jay,

This T I just bought has a 74 CIS engine in it and I just want to get it running good so I can drive it while I get busy on the 72E that is already mostly apart.

Depending on which way I go with the E I might put its 2.7 RS engine in the T and build someing more interesting for the E.... but I'd need to get a little more busy than I am....

I thought the tank was original to the car, I just don't know what the PO did with the fuel pump. I guess I need to check some part numbers to solve that issue.

By the way, my return line had crud in it at the fitting, can I assume my steel lines through the tunnel are possibley clogged as well?

Your return line is likely to be OK. I found that the location, and placement of that banjo return fitting caused alot of crud to build up in it. But, my line running thru the tunnel was OK. It sounds like you're cleaning the tank, just make sure you seal it too (or you'll have my problem...see below).

My "T" is running great...until the surface corrosion on the tank came off, and plugged my inlet screen on the fitting in the tank. Now, I need a good way to suck most of this crud out, so I can drive it to my in-law's garage, and drop the tank. I was thinking a turkey baster or something with a hose attached??

I pulled my tank forward and the hose fittings just came off without me touching them(not so good). The banjo fitting metal line was corroded on the outside and broke off as well. Tipped the tank up to minimise the leakage. I only had a few gallons to dispose of.
