Fluctuating idling, smells rich, Please Help
Hi All,
I have a 78 Sc with smog pump (not connected) and it was idling fine until this weekend. The cold idling fluctuates from 500rpm to 2Krpm for about a dozen times and it just died. the car cannot be restarted until I let it sits for a few hours. It sounded like it was gasping for air and the exhaust smells rich. The car never had a chance to warm up and it started on the first try in the morning. So its not the hot or cold start problem. Has this happened to anyone before and tips on how to cure this problem is greatly appreciated. Thanks again. Andrew |
can anyone help?. Thanks in advance. Andrew

This is a very uneducated guess; I don't have nor ever had an SC or CIS car.
See if there is a relay or fuse which powers the warm up regulator and air regulator(whatever the thingie is called which reduces the airflow as the car is warmed up). Both of thses things may be on the same circuit and would cause both problems. |
Try doing a search here first. There are countless threads that are very helpful.

Air box cracked?

On an sc an idle that hunts from 500-2000k is sometimes caused by the fuel mixture being too rich.
You could have a trusted wrench look at the air fuel mixture for you. The cost for this adjustment is minimal or sometimes even free and the adjustment takes five minutes, no kidding. I have the same car, 79, please post results, I'd be interested to hear what you learn. |
