Broken Steering Wheel

Any body had their steering wheel break? I thought the bearing was gone in the column because I could feel a click-click on the wheel once in a while.

I just figured out that the rib has broken away from the circular do-hickey.

I assume that they are tig welded under the leather? Anybody had their cover of recently to look in there?

This happened to me. I also read about others on this BBS who have had this happen to them. They took off the leather, cut back the foam, welded the wheel, glued back the foam, then put the leather back on using thread from Tandy.

Happens from time to time. They can be repaired as Thunder explains above, uness the steel is rusted. Not very difficult, but a little time-consuming. For the money, you can find used wheels here easily.

A potential cause of breaking a wheel is if you have to push the car use the door jam to apply the push with the door open and just steer with the wheel. Dont use the wheel to push the car.

Bob:

After five years of restoration and pushing I guess I now know exactly how it broke. Good point.

A Porsche Guru pointed it out to me once as their always pushing cars in and out of the shop. It's an easy thing to let slip as you need to push and steer and just grab the wheel.

Helps damage the steering wheel plastic bushing too ( the one that gets replaced with the wavy-washer 928 piece).

More....often we put a lot of sideways force on the wheel as we exit the car(....this is more for the bushing than it would be for breaking the wheel)

That's why they have rear window defoggers, to keep your hands warm in the winter when you're pushin em
(British car joke, adapted because I saw the chance).

Lets not start British car jokes, Wayne wouldn't have enough disk space.
