Time for first Pcar!!!! time to shop.
The time has come in my when I finally have enough money (well pretty darn soon) that I can start looking to buy my first Porsche. Ive got the bug and it's bad oh well. I really want to do a longhood but finding a relatively rust free non sunroof coupe that runs well for a price in my range has not been easy. Seems I am being lured to buy a 914. Scoff, sneer and laugh, I love my dads 911 to no end but for me (only 20, still in college) the 914 might be an easier option. Also seeing as this will be MY first car and my only means of transport I need something that I can work on myself and that doesnt cost me an arm and a leg. I know I know, what part about Porsche did I think would be cheap, nothing I know that after my dad and I built his.
We have the idea of turning the 914 into a 6er and making it our budget racer and my daily driver. Just musing about my first big purchase and looking for pearls of wisdom from all of you since you know far more than I. |

ok, in all seriousness, what is your budget? That will let us know if an SC is possible or if you might have to get a nice 914 and kick that around for a while. IMHO, to get a drivable SC in tired condition you basically need at LEAST 8k and then another 2k for repairs on average. This is just what i've learned in my 18 month search. Also will this be a 2nd car or a daily driver?

Buy an early to mid '70s and back date it. best of both worlds. You know after driving dads 911 you'll NEVER be happy with the 914 (all due respect to the 914 owners out there) Autofest is comming up, might be a good place to cruise the for sale coral , cash normally goes a long ways there. Or lets cruise a couple auctions and see what we find there.

In all seriousness, I personally would not sneer at a 914. Hell I own British cars. But for what you would pay for a decent 914 (around $5000 and up) and what it would cost to convert it to a 914/6 (another $4000-$6000) you are now in the range of a decent SC or a nice 911T.

HAHAHAHA, thats awesome guys. My dad's car, 74 Iroc look with a 78 SC engine is awesome, I love throwing that thing around a track. I know the 6 conversion isnt cheap either but what about these cars isnt? My budget, well currently 03 Jetta's in good cond with low miles are going for 16-18K. I envision this car being a long term project, bodywork and suspension first. Then the motor and trans later on when I can afford it. I am lookin to spend as little as possible for a running teener, paint, interior doesnt matter as long as I can get around in it is all I need. I am going to do all the paint, body and interior myself and also the engine. Trust me, I would love a 911 but no way I could afford to make it as nice as my dad's especially since I might get to have his engine because he is shopping around for something a little crazier right now. I just thought this would be a really fun car to start off with as my first, although deep in my heart I will always want a 911. God why is this so hard!!!!

If you're serious about 914's - check out www.914club.com. 914's seem to be in a resurgence thanks to the article in Excellence. Lots of resources on the 914 BBS and many leads on 914/4/6/8 bargains; but watch out for the dreaded four letter word - RUST!

You say you really want a long hood, so get one. The SC is a better car in many ways, but it's not a classic like the pre '74's (in my biased opinion). I don't know what your budget is, but I bet you could afford a 911T. And if you're going to find minimal rust anywhere, it would be SoCal. I bought my 911E, rust-free, in NorCal, so they are out there. Get one.

Having owned a 914 and 911.
You can find a mint 914 2.0 and drive the snot out of it, or maybe lean towards a 911 SC. = about same price The 914 will be cheaper all in. Dont convert the 914 to a 6..... to much money for the total package.
