Lug nur removal ? - Don't laugh pls

I have a lug nut that appears to be a security type , ie. you need a key to remove it. It is a 78 SC. of course, I don't have a key and can't locate one.

What is the best approach to removing it

dremel cut-off & replace the lug?
I tried vice grips, but could not get a good grip.
I am afraid to use heat, the soft nuts may melt?

TIA,

Earl

Earl...a month or so ago there was a thread about just such a problem. Search under 'lug nuts' and I'll bet you'll get your answer

easy on your soft nuts.
The lock system on mine needed to be broken off using a small chisel to break out the lock cylinder. then the sleeve should slide off

I would weld...or tack weld a nut onto the lugnut, then use the appropriate sized socket with a breaker bar to take it off.

If yours is like mine, it's not a keyed lock, just an oddly shaped nut that requires an "adapter" between it and a conventional 19 mm socket. If that's the case, try a better, larger pair of vise-grips, or channel locks. If they still fail, I'd try a small pipe wrench. You'll end up ruining the nut, but who cares?

BTW, the "adapters" are probably still available from Porsche, if you went to a dealer, they could get you the right one.

Jerry,

You are correct. I need an adapter ( not a key, mistake in describing as such). Right also, I don't care about the nut, just want it off. I will try a larger vise grips.

Thanks

Earl

PS I can imagine what Porsche dealer would want for that?

how do you "tack weld" to an aluminum nut?

Not easy for the home amateur....

I've had luck in the past with this method:
Find a 16 pt. socket that almost fits over the locking nut but not quite.
Hammer it over the nut so that it bites down on the OD, then use a ratchet or breaker bar to unscrew it.

It will trash the locking device but if you don't have a key, who cares?
It may also damage the socket a little, so don't use your best snap-on set.
All in all it should take a couple minutes.

Is the car stolen?

Seriously, check the glove compartment and empty out the tool kit to find the key. It is probably in the car somewhere.

If you go anywhere near the wheel with an arc welder, please pay very close attention to where the grounding clamp is. That goes for all welding around machinery.
Arcing through a bearing is way down near the bottom on the good/bad scale.

just hop on a tool truck, or go to sears, and get the proper size stripped nut remover tool. looks like a socket with internal helical teeth. tap it on, turn it off. all the upscale wheel stealers have a few handy.

I'm w\JW. Those nifty tools you see on infomercials are great for this type of problem. Sears can hook you up. Every mechanic should have one.

Oh yeah...forgot about that. Heck, I even have the kit and I still forgot. Here's the link from the Craftsman website.
