A/C question, the heat is KILLIN me!
 

OK guys, here is the deal. For reasons I don't care to get into, the 930 is going to be my daily driver for a while. I am actually excited about it, the only concern is the notoriously poor a/c and the fact that I live in Texas.

Yes, I have searched, and it looks like the jury is out on something called "Pro Cooler". Can anyone help me figure this out? I can't be driving around the Texas heat in a suit with the a/c like this, I'll sweat right through my clothes in a matter of seconds.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

There've been a lot of recent threads on this topic so you should probably check the archives to see what can be done to upgrade the system.

I just ordered a pro-cooler and I'll be having it installed next week on an otherwise stock 89 930 A/C system. I'll also be installing an electric fan on the decklid condenser with a shroud so it draw air over the whole condenser. Since I'm in Chicago, this may do the trick for me.

The pro-cooler replaces the receiver/drier in the system in the drivers wheel well. Basicly, the pro-cooler is a heat exchanger that takes the cold refrigerant from the outlet of the evaporator and uses it to cool down the outlet of condensers. This has the effect of both lowering the temperature of the inlet to the evaporator, and the raising the temperature of the inlet to the compressor and condensers. The higher temperatures in the condensers make them reject more heat from the system.

In short, it makes the hot side hotter and the cold side colder.

The technology is used on large industrial systems and raises the coefficient of performance of those systems.

I'm pretty sure that the pro-cooler and the condenser fan will do the trick for me. If not, I'll be adding a small condenser with a fan to the drivers wheel well in front of the wheet. Check the archives for recent posts on this topic as well. Griffiths charges an arm and a leg and won't sell individual pieces but many on the list are doing roll-your-own upgrades.

Matt at TPWS does a upgrade on the AC that works pretty good.
There are other options, most require lots of $$$. How cool do you
want to be ? How much do you want to spend ?
I have not seen the Pro-Cooler on a Porsche, surely someone
has done this locally. I have seen a car that had a
condenser mounted under the car ! I think it was David Gross
on his old 930. Good Luck with this !

The Procooler Guy, Ron Maxwell, lives at Canyon Lake - 830-935-3343. He's a good source of info even if you don't buy from him.

I believe the Pro Cooler may help but it alone is not going to stop you from sweating in a suit in Texas heat.I live in Orlando and we have killer heat also,my 83SC was upgraded by the previous owner to a Sanden compressor,that helped but one of the biggest problems on these cars is lack of condensor size,even worse on the 930s because you only have half of a condensor on the rear hood,I have purchased an underbelly condensor,these things are very large and it will be my winter project.I am planning on keeping the OEM front and rear condensor so I will have 3 total and I'm staying with R12 refrigerant,I'm told I should be able to frreze my balls off with this setup,we will see.
