Can't get out of 3rd gear...

Hi,

It started last week when I was on the track & now its the same on the street - trying to disengage from 3rd gear and I literally have to yank it out.

No problem in putting it into 3rd or any other gears. And it does grind occasionally when I put it in.

Someone suggests that rather than worn out dog teeth/synchro, it might be the selector fork?

Anyone out ther with similar prior experience and any suggestions to what to check before the expensive proposition of dropping & rebuilding the tranny?

thanks...

I actually had the same problem with my 915 trans. I was driving one day and I went to shift into fourth and it was lodged in 3rd, couldn't get it out for the life of me. Drove it to the local shop all the way in 3rd. They took it in, looked at it, and about 20 min later, they came out and told me I had a bent shift rod and it was lodged and had to be replaced. I must have run over something on the freeway or on the road to cause it to bend, not sure how it happened, but after they replaced the rod, everything was fine, no more being stuck in 3rd. Hope this helps.

you might want to remove the plate on the bottom of the trans and see if the pivot fork on the inside of that plate has come loose. use a drain pan. if it's still tight, then you may be able to pop the shaft into neutral with a screwdriver.

Sorry about the ignorance... when you say shift rod, you are talking about the rod in the transmission tunnel in the car?

John, thanks for the tips. Do I need to drain the tranny before opening that up or only a small amount will drain out?

You need to drain the tranny first...otherwise, it will end up draining as soon as you pull that plate off.

if you were stuck in second gear, you could sing the theme song from Friends.

Let me go look through my records and get the exact part name and # of what they replaced and I'll let you know. Something exposed under the car had got bent. Not exactly sure of the name. I'll get back to you on it.

But then stuck in 2nd on a 930 is not that bad neither - still enough to get you into jail very quickly ;) unless you are on a track of course.
