Floor insulation Removal / Weight reduction Tip
 

I am in the process of putting new seats in the 911.
After a visit to the welder to lower the seat rails, I decided to remove all the thick hard factory floor insulation/ sound deadining stuff on the floor before repainting. On a whim, I decided to try a Fein Multimaster with the scraping blade. If any one is thinking about removing their floor insulation for weight savings, I suggest you look into getting one of these things. It takes the stuff right off. It is still no fun, but I wasnt getting very far with the hand scraper.

The Fein is great tool - much more than a detail sander.

Sounds pretty good. I wonder if that is easier than dry ice and a mallet?

I have heard from 2 or 3 guys that it does. You fill the floor with dry ice and the stuff gets real brittle. Then you whack it with the mallet and it shatters.

I'm thinking about the interior side of the rear firewall. Could use a board or something to hold dry ice up there.

FWIW, the Fein vibrates - something like a saw used to remove plaster casts. Mine is one of the best power tool purchase I ever made, along with the concept of the cordless drill, and the Fein shop vac (which is quiet and powerful). As long as the Germans make tools and beer (but not laws (Brits) or coffee (Ital.)) this will be a great world civilisation.

Assuming we are talking about the same thing, I removed my using a cheapo heat gun from Harborfreight. With a scraper, it came off like a butter. Plus, I did not disturb the paint and metal undernetah.

I will look up the tool you specified as I am not familiar with it.

Mine all came out easy as pie with a putty knife, a mallet and a few scraped knuckles. No dry ice, no motor tools, no worries.
