Ok, if it's been converted from LHD to RHD, it's not a blue-chip early car.

See if you can borrow Mike Z's sawzall! :D

Infact, offer to fly Mike in, stock up on beer and I'll drive up, with some Melbourne guys to watch! :D

Choppe da Bastid...

obrut 08-19-2004 11:12 PM

I've got a good lead on a used clamshell - fingers crossed. If I can get one then the 'surgery' will commence not long after.

Still tossing up ideas for doing a screen that:
a - will not cost a zillion bucks; and
b - will not look too backyard special.

NT911 08-19-2004 11:22 PM

Why don't we just have the chopping party and we'll sort out the rest later :p

Seriously, I saw the car yesterday - it's beautiful, and will make a great speedster... Viper Green is pretty much my favourite colour on early 911's.

tangerine911e 08-19-2004 11:29 PM

Let's start the chanting. Chop... chop... chop.... You know you want to :D

I'll bring the beer. Just to settle the nerves of course.

Ryan,

Did you decide whether you wanted a screen for both driver and passenger or a single one for driver or separate ones for driver and passenger?

Tinton 08-20-2004 12:11 AM

This looks to be the best screen I have seen..

I think I prefer it without the clamshell, too. Will the clamshell be fixed?

PanAmeriCan 08-20-2004 05:29 AM

If you haven't found one yet, you could check a screen out here, Ryan:
Brooklands Speedscreen

Have you figured how to support the unibody/chassis once the Targa bar is gone?

Good luck!

banjomike 08-20-2004 05:53 AM

You ought to think about the factory speedster windshield. I think the little plastic one looks a bit goofy.

As far as the clamshell goes... My Dad has a 1960 Roadster, and I think it looks great with the Tonneau cover. You'd have to put a bunch of snaps around the base of the current rear window. You could have an upolsterer make one up for you. A few more snaps on the dash and it can fold out to cover the interior when parked.

Joe Bob 08-20-2004 07:28 AM

I'm ready.....

Anthony - the plan is a stock clamshell at first, then maybe a custom 'flatter' one in the future. The one on that silver car is a little too big/high for my liking.

PAC - thanks for the link. I've thought about those screens but still don't know if they'd suit.

B Mike - the factory screens are too much $$'s for this 'fun' project. Stage 1 is to try are perspex screen, but a little more rounded than the silver car above. If that looks lame, then I might try adding some 356 speedster side posts.

MikeZ - bring it...

Langers 08-26-2004 07:08 PM

Hey guys,

I found the blueprint for the cutting party ;)

The targa could be the new Huntley Hilllclimb champion

http://andrewmacbeth.com/other/Car_Stripped.htm

Or alternatively someone could bring a angle grinder down to Albury for a combined NSW and Victoria cutting party lol.

obrut 08-26-2004 08:10 PM

that is bloody funny, love the last pic

FenderGuy 08-26-2004 08:33 PM

The first factory based 911 speedster

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1093581035.jpg

A protype 911 "Speedster based on the 911SC was built as early as Spring 1983, but was kept secret for 4 years

For that SC trash talk that was going on earlier

Kevin Stewart 08-26-2004 08:41 PM

Im still looking for a clam shell also, Kevin

jkarolyi 08-26-2004 09:49 PM

Now that SC speedster windscreen is the way to go!!! The story behind the '89 Speedster is very interesting...pretty much a secret project within the company.

Langers 08-26-2004 11:20 PM

Ryan,

While I know we've all been anticipating taking an angle grider to the car with no set plans on how to do so, is it actually possible to remove the bar, windscreen and rear screen in a manner such that you could sell them on?

obrut 08-29-2004 02:53 PM

roll bar and rear screen can be removed intact - so that's a yes

front windscreen frame is part of the car and has to be chopped - so no

i actually drove the green beast a little on saturday - really starting to like it

KALLGREN 08-29-2004 03:33 PM

Obrut,

I am still saying, keep it. Even if your best girl likes to light up the tyres once in a while, she is still going to appreciate a "classic" night on the town.

Just think how much more you would like it if it were a Speedster ;)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/182146-mfi-flat-spot-fixed-freakin-sport-muffler.html

also, while poking around under the car i noticed it has one SSI, yep just one... gotta love cheap a$$ previous owners

Updates

Good news: I have found a clam shell and it should land here by the end of the week.

Bad news: Probably won't have much of a chance to work on it 'til nearer the end of the year. (This could be good news if you're in the "don't chop" camp)

obrut 01-21-2005 07:47 PM

UPDATE: The little green targa has been saved from the chop!

I've had no time to work on this project in my 4 months of ownership. I couldn't see this situation changing - in fact it seems to be getting worse. A friend (and fellow Pelicanite) made an offer and she's sold. It will soon undergoe a light resto before hitting the streets again.

I'm sure the new owner will reveal themselves shortly.

tangerine911e 01-21-2005 09:10 PM

I've been outed already!

Yes - my wife (Trac) took a keen liking to the T whenever we saw it at the 'chopshop'.

One green car later we now have two 'longhoods'. :D

A quick pic of the saved car! A light spruce up and the T will be as good as new! :)

Glad to hear it. That car is too damn cute to chop.

Langers 01-22-2005 03:21 AM

Guess this clears the way for the tangerine mobile to become a dedicated track car. (If you ever get it back :p) Bring on Targa 2007!

BTW is your garage finished yet?

sketchers356 01-24-2005 05:00 PM

I was intrigued as to an early 911 speedster but dang that silver one is ugLay.
