Rainy day projects

It has been raining steadily in MD for more than 12 hours. Good news is that since I can't go out on the boat I could spend some time in the garage. Today's projects: fix oil leak at engine oil cooler thermostat, install "new to me" oil tank, change oil/filter and install new cam tower lines with restrictors.

Porsches are just great to work on, especially with carbs. You can reach just about everything in the engine bay. If not, just drop the engine a couple of inches.

The engine oil cooler thermostat on my motor recently started to leak big time. I figured the O ring on the thermostat had gone bad. There are two nuts that hold the thermostat in place. We removed those but it did not budge! We did a partial motor drop and pulled the rear cooling tin to get better access. Turns out that the last person that was in there added locktite to the O-ring to help with sealing! Good grief. Finally was able to get the thermostat freed up, cleaned and new o ring installed.

The oil tank in my car developed and oil leak so I purchased another one from a fellow pelican. As you can see from the picture, this is a sportomatic oil tank. The oil line connectors for the trans were plugged when the car was converted to a 5-speed 901 transmission.

To my surprise the "new to me" oil tank did not have an oil level pick up. Must have been from a 911T? Ran it through the parts cleaner and installed it today. I'll run this one until I can find a better tank.

Last project was to install new cam tower lines with the restrictors.

Here is a close up of the stock part and the restrictor part. I'm not sure what these are called. My understanding in that the restrictor limits pressure to the cam towers and boosts overall oil pressure. After filling the car with oil and starting it, oil pressure was indeed higher on the gauge.

Next project will be my first "at home" valve adjustment. Couldn't be too hard right?

What's the advantage of boosting the oil pressure on these lines?

I think the idea is to restrict flow to the cam towers to boost pressure to the bottom end and less oil foaming.
