180+ degrees, level, at idle. pull out the dipstick. wipe it clean. insert into the small tube quickly and pull out to inspect oil level. should be midway between the scratches/notches.

Got the temp and flat.
Does the saucer on the dip stick go flat against the tube on the inside of the oil fill spout? Like wayyyyy in there? I suspect so but had to ask. Thanks! |

What?!?!

Well Mr D.
This is one of those questions that may seem a little silly until someone asks. The way I see it, the 'saucer' should be oriented as one would read the word 'oil' as one stands at the filler. At least that's the way I've been checking my oil.

It should be inside the filler neck and inside the guide tube

Just as Shuie said, dipstick inside its' tube and seated all the way to the stop, or "saucer".

Thanks guys...got me filled up and ready to drive yesterday.
Not the cleanest install for being user freindly. I like the external cosmetics and the weight in the car but user friendly it aint. |

holy ****, is that Russian Blue's car?
I forgot to mention that the oil tank is going to hold about a quart less oil than the one you are used to. Just a heads up if you are doing an oil change |

I learn something every week on this board. I have owned my 72S for 26 years and never knew that I had the wrong dip stick. Here is a picture of what I have. Does anyone have a original one in good condition that they would consider selling?

Yep, the two dipsticks pictured are WRONG...mine has a flat disc, with OIL stamped on it...lemme go pull it, I'll try to descibe it better, and give some rough measurements...stay tuned.
