speedometer issues
 

hi everyone, got my 87 911 carrera. The problem i hacve is like the speedometer is sticking. if i come to a stop and then go up to about 20 miles per hour or so, basically when i'm just normal driving and shift to second, the needle starts to read and then reads normal. Anyone ever seen this problem. Is there anything to do short of replacing the gauge. I would like to fix it if anyone has a quick fix. It bothers me, but not enough to reaplce the gauge.lol

Check and clean all the electrical connections. If that doesn't do it, do a search. There is info on gears that can be replaced and on the connection at the transmission.

It's probably the magnetic sending unit that attaches to the outside of the transmission case...held on by a small clip. If I recall correctly, it does not penetrate the trans case but simply gets inductive pulses from inside ( via magnets).

Replace the sending unit...I have the same issue on my 85 ( 915 trans) that uses a similar arrangement. No speed indication until 20 mph and then it jumps up tp 20 mph+ and continues normally. I have the part but haven't yet installed it.

I'm not a speedo expert but at least the 87 speedos have a history of being defective. Mine was replaced by the original owner at only 4k miles. The replacement one still works (100k miles now) but it does occasionally bounce around a tad. Is yours the original?

honestly, i'm not sure. I do believe it is thoughy. so the 87's had a problem with this?

I have the same problem......similar 87 carrera.

was told it might be the sender or the signal wire going into the speedo. Someone also mentioned abt a loose connection at the fuse box. Any can tell me where in the fuse box is the speedo fuse?

I too have the same problem. From stop, the speedometer often sticks until you hit 30 mph or so.

One data point to add: I can always "jiggle" the needle off of rest/zero by giving the front of the gauge a slight tap with my fingernail. Therefore, I think the issue is a mechanical one rather than an electrical one. Definitely on the gauge end, and nothing to do with the sender on the transmission.

a member once posted that his speedo glass was installed backwards and it caused the needle to come in contact with the glass..

It may be plastic instead of glass.
