Moving an 84 coupe to San Diego
So what's the deal with emissions?
Car and I are in NY and hope to be moving out that way. Can I get an exemption? Do I need to get additional smog stuff installed? Where is a nice place to live? Need good schools and nice community. Wife prefers new construction. Any leads would be great. Regards, Scott

You'll need to put the smog stuff back on (at least for a day or two every other year). Lots of nice neighborhoods, but it depends on where you will be working and how far you are willing to commute.

Housing is EXPENSIVE out here. Are you looking to buy or rent? House or apartment/condo? Where are you going to work? If buying, what price range? Post here or PM me, Id be happy to give you some ideas.

Your car (assuming it is not a grey market ROW car) is 50 state legal, which of course includes California.
Unless you have removed smog equipment, you'll be fine. You won't have to add anything that the car didn't originally come with. An '84 doesn't have a lot of smog equipment, though. The cat would be the one thing I guess people remove sometimes. Check the California DMV website for more info on bringing in a car from another state. |

Also, IMO you have to have a lot of guts to buy a house in So. Cal. at today's prices. IMO if you put down 20%, there is a good chance you'll see that money gone in 2-4 years. Good luck!

Perhaps true Brian.....It amazes me that prices are still climbing in my area. I'll sell and rent for a few years if and when I feel that prices start fall. I just hope they will level out.
Good luck on your move to San Diego. Beautiful area! Coming from NY with sky high real estate prices also, it will be a reletively painless and enjoyable move.

High real estate prices? What are you talking about?!?! I just found a 1bd/2ba condo for just under $650 per sq ft. What a bargain! Buy now before it's $1k per sq ft!!!

If you want new construction there are many places on the I-15 corridor between Hwy 78 and Hwy 163. The commute downtown is terrible during rush hours. There are several good independant Porsche shops in San Diego that could get you smog checked.
