Different door clicking question
 

On the driver's side door of my 83 SC, I hear a clicking sound when the door is opened and closed. I inspected it and found that the portion of the arm that attaches to the body is the culprit. At about 2/3 open or closed, the piece quickly snaps to the side a short distance making the annoying noise.

I researched the fix in Wayne's 101 book and searched the forum, but both only dealt with the arm attached to the door. I saw the kit, but again it only deals with the arm that connects to the door. The attached photo shows the driver side part that I am referring to. Any suggestions? Are there bolts to tighten? I cannot seem to find a way to access the area without removing the door. Any help would be appreciated.

The problem is probably torn door metal holding the door stop. It is hard to see the tear because the doors have a inner and outer skin and the door stop is bolted to the inner skin. The clicking is the torn metal making contact when the door is opened and closed. This is a common problem with 911's, but an expensive one to fix. If caught early you can buy a reinforcing plate to add strength to the door, but if the door metal has already started to tear its too late! Once this happens the door must be removed from the car and the outer door skin in the area of the door stop must be cut away and the torn inner door metal must be welded. After this area is repaired then you must weld the outer skin you removed to access the inner skin problem and then re-install the door.

After looking at your pictures again, if you are saying that the door stop tab mounted in the door jamb is moving then that is another problem. That tab is welded to the backside of the door jamb and has no adjustment. In your picture you can see the small circular indentions. These are the factory spotwelds. If these are broken, or if the tab has broken you may be able to weld the tab in place from the jamb side since you cannot access the inner jamb.

SC, thanks. I thought the PO welded them as a quick fix. I'll have it rewelded. Again, Pelican brothers to the rescue.

A couple of days ago, someone suggested replacing the keeper pin with a bolt, washers and a nylock nut. Tighten untill the arm can't *snap.* Retighten as necessary. If nothing is torn, this seems to be the hot tip to stop the annoying click.
