Gulf 917 at Monterey Historics

I attended practice day today at the Monterey Historics. There was a Gulf-Porsche 917 in group 7B. It will race Sunday afternoon. The paint looked original. Paint chips were proudly displayed like battle scars.

The only car ever made that is more intimidating (to me) is the 917 sunoco car that ran can am in 73.

That car was in the G&W tent at Rennsport 2. It does have alot more character than most 917's.

Beautiful car, and excellent photos - especially the 2nd shot with the car cresting the track.

I read somewhere that 917s are currently valued at about $1.5m but it is good to see that they are not being stashed in museums because of it.

I took a tour of Canapa's facility a few months back. I don't think he has a 917K like the one pictured. He did show us his later model 917(?) red, open-top, turbo-charged, 1100 hp monster. He said it was unbelievable to drive.

I actually saw Bruce Canapa in the paddock today standing near a gulf blue 908/3.

The camera hides a lot.

I saw this car yesterday. Brad is right, the paint shows a lot of "patina". The front is covered with stone chips, some areas had virtually no paint. This is not a sheltered show car.

It's refreshing to see. Most of the cars at these events have near perfect paint. This one has an air of authenticity that the shiney ones lack.

The contrast between the car in person and Brad's pics is shocking. Something to consider next time you bid on an ebay car.

Ebay? There are a lot of cars here that get photoshopped and 10 foot pictures. Good light and a good hand behind the lens can hide a lot.

Either way the 917 is something special.

Another action shot, this one taken this morning (Sunday) during group 7B warm up:

I believe that is the Speed Channel camera in the background.

Great photos of the 917. During the race he was not pushing that hard while Redman had the 908 pegged.
Bruce Canepa said he's trying to sell his 936 to purchase a
Gulf 917 but I'm not sure he's made any deals yet. I'm pretty sure it would have been in his paddock if he done a deal.

The Historics are on Speed? Sweet!

They don't appear to have updated their schedule yet, but I've updated my TiVo.

Canepa left his 917 at home this weekend, it bummed me out. He did drive his '83 Warstiener champ (???) car though in the second to last race. He placed 2nd.

I was much more interested in the 908 that ran, that thing was crazy. It was fighting to catch the 1st plave Cheveron the entire race. Those guys where not messing around either, it was quite a sight.
