Adaptive Variable Rate Transmission
Trying to track down Information about any Sports cars that use an Adaptive Variable Rate transmission. Anyone know of Any ?
A friend of mine is trying to figure out a car that there friend is getting its kind of a game.... so she asked me. The only thing she has to go on is she believes the car is a Sports car it has a new type of Automatic Transmission but it is not a Tiptronic. The only thing that comes to mind is the Adaptive Variable Rate Transmission thought I read somwhere that this was being used in a sports car Application. Any one have any idea or leads ? Thanks |
OK I came up with BMW's SMG transmission and Audis DSG tranmission anyone got another Ideas or suggestions

The highest torque series production CVT application I have heard of is audi's mostly metallic belt CVT, I think offered in their A6. Not a sports car though. Sports cars that I can think of all have manual type gearboxes (even if electrohydraulically controlled (SMG, Ferrari, Maserati, Toyota)), or automatic type gearboxes with a torque converter, even if they have a silly manual mode (Tiptronic, Mercedes). No real CVTs that I can think of.
This is kind of a waste of time though if _she_ doesn't even know the details. |
The Audi CVT is probably closest to what you asked about, it is torque limited to their n/a 3 liter engines though.
Nothing silly about TIP at least as implemented in my old 5spd S4 or my new 6Spd S4. It is adapative has a usable sport mode and steering wheel mounted paddles that flat out work. With the proper engine these things are the nuts! |
Haven't tried DSG yet but it is a manual that can shift like any auto. Sounds interesting. It is always in 2 gears at once(by design;) ) so shifting is incredibly quick.

I agree DSG sounds really interesting, gets rid of the pitfalls of SMG/ferrari F1/etc.
Silly wasn't a good way to put it. Tip style trans are just not my preference, but maybe I haven't driven the right cars with them. My opinion is still TBD on the electrohydraulic manuals. I think they will keep getting better and better. I can see being able to brake with your left foot any time being quite handy on the track. |
My family car
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1092953329.jpg 340hp 40valve V8, 6spd tip, and all the goodies to go w/ It'll never take the place of my 911 but then again the 911 ain't much fun from Dec to Mar.9and a lot of other dayeither) |
Very nice, Bill. I dig the Avant! I was picturing your S4s as sedans for some reason.

Has anybody here traced the fixed ratio boxes development back to the PDKs ?

It would have to be a euro version. Baer was saying we got screwed because we only got the RS6 sedan here, not the Avant. Unless things have changed since I last checked.

I think you need to try the latest Ford Galaxy. I believe that it has one of these transmissions.
