G50 upgrade cost?
How much to have professionally done, incl
1) Shift fork bearing upgrade 2) Spring mounted clutch (upgraded from rubber?) thanks mike |

I meant the upgrade FOR a G50. Not upgrade from 915-->G50. (besides, it's been debated on this board if going from 915-->G50 is truly an upgrade!! but that's another story) I believe the G50 upgrade consists of the fork bearing and metal spring. Not sure of what parts are needed, and how many hrs labor. If anyone's had this done professionally, what's the ballpark figure for this upgrade? thanks mike |

I had my clutch done "while they were in there" doing valve guides. Clutch was still fine at 85k, but I thought I might just as well have it done with the engine out. I sourced most parts through Pelican for around $1000, if I recall. Labor is a pretty minor uptick if they're into the engine anyway - say another few hundred $. I'd guess the labor bill would jump to about $1200 or so for clutch alone.
Can't say that I noticed a difference with either fork upgrade or the change from the rubber to spring centre clutch. I had been advised to expect more noise with the spring centre - but if anything I would say the opposite is true. Good luck. |

Next Question re:G50. Is clutch 'chatter' normal upon releasing the clutch with low rpm? eg taking off in 1st gear, as the clutch is released, a chatter is audible for 1-2 seconds. On another thread, someone mentioned that this 'chatter' is normal for G50's. Does this happen to most G50's? I've only driven one other G50, and as i recall, it didn't have this chatter. Other opinions? thanks mike |
Hmm...sound like rubber dampening on your clutch is old and cracked. I also had chatter when starting from standstill on my 930 (it had same sort of rubber damped clutch) due to cracked rubber. You could replace the clutch disk only and see if it helps?

I can't find the spring mounted clutch disc in Pelican's catalog. I know it was there back in March because I ordered one. Is this part not available anymore?
Anyway, the parts alone to upgrade the G50 look to be about $250. This is for the new shaft and bushing set, and the improved clutch release fork. This is also the kit that does not require drilling. It's definitley a DIY canidate. This was my first project when I got my car, and my first project on a Porsche. Just beware, once the engine and transmission come out, you WILL get a serious case of "while you're in there". |
I updated with the updated cross shaft and fork that Pelican sells and a spring centered clutch. I heard that the spring ctr is noisy, have not found that to be true in my situation. There are two kits for the cross shaft update, one requires drilling the cross shaft bores slightly larger the other kit does not. Either way it is no big deal, just use a good quality drill bit when its time to drill. PM me if you have any specific questions regarding this upgrade.

Search under: g50 clutch, etc. Seems that the general consensus was to stay with the rubber centered clutch. Smoother If the chattering is a shaking when cold then I would say clutch. If the chatter is just a noise, there is a group of "levers" in the housing in the tunnel between the seats that vibrate together, that was a "common problem". Sorry I can't be more descriptive. |
I did the G50 "update" as well at 78K. The old bearings had seized, the car was absolutely terrible to drive. Clutch pedal was stiff as hell.
There are a few different kits out there, I happened to use the original Porsche update parts, but I think they are all pretty much the same. This includes the following: 900 075 057 02 Hex Head Screw 950 116 710 04 Clutch Shaft 999 201 339 00 Needle Bearing 950 116 725 00 Clutch Shaft 950 116 713 02 Clutch Shaft 999 201 365 00 Needle Bearing 950 116 086 06 Clutch Release (2) 999 113 418 40 Rubber Seal Total parts cost about $140 retail. I also installed a new pressure plate, disc and t/o bearing while in there even though all 3 looked okay. The 240mm spring-centered disc you want is from the early 75-77 3.0L 930. I don't have any clutch chatter nor does it sound any noisier. If you're paying someone to do the work, I would budget $1,500-$2,000 for parts (G50 update components and clutch pieces) and labor, depending on the rates in your area. Here in Orange County, many independent Porsche shops charge $75-$95 per hour. Here are the OE Sachs part numbers if interested: 1861 568 331 Clutch Disc, 75-77 3.0L 930 3082 175 232 Pressure Plate, 87-89 G50 3151 173 202 T/O Bearing Good luck, if your car truly needs the update performed at this time it will make a marked improvement once it is done. I had my G50 update done when I had the clutch replaced recently. My wrench in San Luis Obispo only charged me $820 for a new Sachs rubber hub clutch kit and T/O bearing, plus $135 for the G50 upgrade parts. Total labor was $525 which included a valve adjust and slave cyl replacement. Seems cheap enough to me. Maybe he gave me a better deal in order to secure a new customer?
Anyway, I have NO chatter at all with the new clutch and my neck is snapping real good. Oh, this would've cost me much more at either of the two shops in Santa Barbara. |
