Apologies about the repost but the engine / trans combination on my 72T is coming out this morning, the right way or the wrong way.
Can anyone tell me if there is a trick to removing what I think is the speedo cable socket-like nut? I am assuming the cable itself cannot unscrew & I must remove this large nut. Correctamundo or no? TIA

No trick, just finding the right wrench to get in there. A smaller pair of channel locks worked for me. Being aluminum and a fine thread, it might have a little corrosion on the threads making this difficult. I think it might be the same size as one of the oil line wrenches, if you bought the entire set Pelican sells. I can't quite remember, but I may have used that initially to remove it. But now, channel locks work fine.
But you are correct, the speedo cable doesn't come off until you remove this.

This nut appears to be plated steel, anout 2 inches tall, round at the mating surface end, hex on the other.
Oh well, I guess it has to come off regardless. Thanks, Bill

Yep, it's hollow on the round portion, and I do believe aluminum, so don't crush the round part. Just get a good grip on the hex.

Thanks Guys. Mission Accomplished.
Man, these motors sure are bulky for just 2.4 liters. They don't look nearly so big when in the car. Bill
