Interest in Painted or Powdercoated Fans?

I was wondering what the interest level is out there in having the fan on your alternator POLISHED or POWDERCOATED? What would be a fair price?

I have the means of doing this process on an exchange basis or even on a 5 day or less turnaround time if you wish to keep your original part

Lemme guess, you bought a gun and have an old oven you'r gonna use for baking? If so, sweet. I probably won't want to have it done anytime soon, but eventually I'll definately be dropping you a PM.

Well, no not exacly - My high school budy owns a Metal Polishing shop just 1/2 mile from my current Job location. He also does custom paint for bikes (choppers and what not) I also have access to exchange fans about 1 mile from my home. So..................

That's the feedback I'm looking for.

I had a fan and the shroud done for $75. Silver powdercoat. Love it. Would have paid more... The blasting was apparently the biggest PITA.

I paid $75 also. Bead blasted (sand blast is to harsh on the magnesium) and powder coated: fan, fan housing, fan strap, and the little fixings that hold it together. Two colors, black and silver. Looks great.

I love posting these pics. Before:

And after:

FWIW, I got the fan, fan housing, four valve covers, two chain housings and two chain covers blasted and coated for $100. That's a good deal. About 3 years ago. The fan and fan housing are particularly tricky since they are magnesium. the coater baked those two pieces for nearly a week before coating, to "outgas" the metal. Still, there were slight blemishes. a SEARCH would turn up discussions about the difficulty of magnesium.

Please don't tell me that it's California Polishing in Huntington Beach. I've had quite a few problems with them. They don't do powdercoating though, only polishing.

The guys I use now are Specialized Powdercoating in Huntington Beach. Keith and Kelly do great work at a fair price. Can one of these two be your buddy?

Nope - Neither one is it.

I wouldn't have the fan powdercoated. Depending on how they hang the fan, the lowest part will have a thicker coating, throwing off the balance.

Not if it hung horizontily.

I am planning to take my fan to Al Reed in a few weeks to get a quote, I'd be interested in seeing what you can offer to compare.

Don't bother delaying, just have him do it. I am just starting with the concept. However, once you are done I would like for you to share a high res picture so I can benchmark his quality. I doubt he would be offended to have a little competition concidering his primary busienss is wheels.

I 'm not doing it as a primary buisness, just as a way to pay for some DE event and maybe help spruce up other Pelicantes engine bays out there.

You're right, but whenever I take something in to a shop that requires special care they always seem to pop a stupid pill when they do my stuff.

My understanding is that hanging it horizontally is the trick, but the reason isn't really for balance.

If it is hung vertically the shape of the airfoils will be inconsistent from side to side and it will make a resonant sound that is irritating. (and it was hell to chase down!)

Also - The clearances in the housing are a bit tight so you also need to make sure that the end of the blades are cut down by a few thousandths so the thickness of the coating on the housing doesn't cause interference problems.
