901 Transmission input shaft seal leak -
An early car I am looking at has a leaky 901 transmission. The shop that did the PPI says that both the input shaft seal and one of the side covers is leaking. They are quoting me over 6 hours to fix this as they say the transmission needs to come out. Does this sound right? Also, how risky would it be to drive this car a long distance without fixing these leaks? Thanks.

Depends on how bad the leaks are; oil the clutch and you may not make it up hills plus you'll need a new clutch disk. If the transmission runs low on oil you may damage bearings/gears. How was the oil level when they checked the transmission - has it already been run low on oil? Jim

Thanks Jim - The oil level in the transmission was fine. They were concerned that the leak could get a lot worse on short notice and cause some big problems for me on a long drive (i.e. cross country).
Is this a tranny out procedure on a 901?

Input seal replacement requires the transmission come out or at least the engine be removed. Side cover seal (output shaft seal) can be done with transmission (and engine) in the car.

O.K. - thanks for the input. Their shop time estimate is probably right on then.
