bay area corner balance cost, stop! it's ripping..

i am being quoted $500 for align, corner balance, and height adjustment. i understand being in the golden state, especially in the bay area (seen realestate prices?) i am paying premium, but 500 bones??

i have the ride height set and there should only be minor adjustment there front and rear, no reindex. this is a highend shop, any other recommendations for shops in the south bay, tri-valley, or peninsula?

i know you have to pay to play with these cars but the $1200 on parts for my complete rebuild of suspension has given me a case of alligator arms. (they wont reach my pockets)

heres the joint >>>http://www.customalignment.com/index.htm

i have searched the old threads on this, but im looking for a bay area cost comparison.

broke in the bay

Custom Alignment does good work and comes very highly recommended. The last time I was there there was a 993 Turbo, an 89 Speedster and lots of other exotics and muscles cars in the queue. I think the bulk of the $500 would be for the height adjustment. I'm sure the alignment and corner balancing alone would be much cheaper.

By the way, did you get my messages about the heater parts?

you know me as hardcore? well except for porn and rum....

i figure this is the last of my suspension work for many moons so i should go all out, credit cards be dammed! my plan was to have the suspension sorted by the time my car became smog exempt, then work on hp adds. but the state law makers have put the k-bosch (get it, bosch?) on that.

hell its only money, and if i was not spending it on my car it would be wine and women, or worse.....

Corner-balancing seems pretty hardcore to me. I mean, is having the car perfectly balanced going to improve my driving? Besides, I doubt a precision balancing is going to matter much with your monster torsion bars anyway. With that said, I openly admit that Im a cheap-ass, so take what you like and leave the rest.

I disagree. Corner Balancing makes a huge difference. Just ask anyone who has done suspension upgrades, run the car at the track, and then had it corner balanced and run it again. I would be suprised if anyone said it wasn't worth it. (Still, you don't want to get ripped off).

For that price you are half way to a set of digital scales. Why don't you go halfsies with someone in your local area and learn to corner balance? It takes a while to learn the basic technique but in a few weekends you'd have it.

Then YOU can charge $500!

Corner balancing is not for the hardcore, it's some of the best money you can spend on your 911. It will improve your driving experience immensely. Spend the money, you won't be sorry.

Down here $300 is about the going rate at shops that are famous for that type of work, unless the suspension is trashed and needs work.

thats what i was looking for. i asked for an estimate, so i dont know if thats worst case scenario... i will call them back to determine if it will be less if it takes less time.

again this is an alignment and cb.

Tru-Line in Seattle does very good work...lots of Porsche and Ferrari. I had my 85 aligned and corner balanced after putting new tires on recently for about 250.00 Well worth it especially when you buy expensive new rubber.

Toby,
Jeff Reitmeir in Los Altos charged me $390 for corner balance/alignment. He was a bit slow, but that was because he had to send out his scales for repair. I decided to leave my car at the shop while the scales were out due to the difficulty arranging transportation to Los Altos from San Mateo. Jeff is a national SCCA solo champion. I beleive he did a good job seting my car up for combination road/track.

One of the reasons I bought my own scales was to be able to do CB for others in the future. Maybe the time is ripe to get off my a$$...

yeah im familiar with the reitmeir family. i know his two sisters, one is married to a very good friend. i have never met jeff. i spoke with the shop again just a few minutes ago, and 150 of what ive been quoted is if it need significant adjustment. not a reindex, but a significant changes.

i guess i just gotta suck it up and pay.. part of my deal is much like yours with location, custom alignment is close to my house and they will do it monday.

additionally brad did you get out from under the house all safe like? when i called the other night to discuss the return of your socket she said you were crawling... gotta hate that.. can i look to get you that thing back at the next group drive or autocross, or i can bring it up this weekend some time. let me know what you want to do, and thanks for the use of the socket..

toby
