915 Reseal - Input Shaft

Goodfellas,

I want to replace the shifter shaft & input shaft seals on my '72 915.

I don't see too much potential problem with the shifter shaft, I shoud be able to see it from the outside.

However, I cannot see how I can replace the input shaft seal from the outside. I don't see how I could get a seal down between the input shaft & snout.

Unless the input shaft pulls out... Does it? Is it retained in any fashion before I go yanking on it?

In my old Corvair the input shaft would slide right out.

Knowledgable advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

0n the '72 915 the input shaft seal can only be replaced from the inside; transmission has to come apart to accomplish this. The shaft assemblies may be mostly left assembled but the housings must be split. The input shaft is removed from the bell housing by pulling forward into the gear housing. (I've rebuilt a '72 915). Thanks Jim.

It doesn't appear to be leaking now so I guess I won't mess with it. I was in preventative mode.
