77 2.7 idle problem
I bought my first Porsche last fall and I'm having an idle problem. It's a 1977 911s 2.7 - the engine was rebuilt by a reputable local mechanic. Starting and idle is fine on a cold engine. When it's warm and I shut off it will idle normally if I restart within a few minutes. However, wait about 10 min and it will start but not idle at all. After driving for a while, it will eventually idle again. Thanks for your help!

Tell us more about how it acts when it won't idle at all. Does it die out or hunt for an idle rpm or idle high? Just expand a little on the description.

When attempting a restart with a warm engine that has been off for about 10 min., it will start with a little gas, but as soon as I lift my foot off the accelerator, it dies completely. When driving it does the same thing, making it a challenge in local traffic. It will eventually idle normally(1000rpm) after driving for a little while. When it does idle after a cold start, it's steady about 1000-1500rpm. If I start it cold, I can drive it for an hour on a warm engine and the idle is fine. I recently had it in the shop and he cleaned the points, which stopped the tach needle from oscillating, and adjusted the idle, but said he may need to do more "exploring" to figure out this idle problem. He has a good reputation and reasonable rates, but is slooow - so exploring will mean at least a week without the car. I thought maybe I could look into it myself. Any ideas?
