What Pelican's all about
well maybe for Wayne it's about becoming insanely wealthy to add a fast Ferrari to the garage, but my being here for a few years now, this weekend was a great example of the community.
Bob (russort) posted a guards red Carrera driver's fender for sale. Since mine has had a truck tire crush in it for about year (still need to learn how to paint!), I inquired, a few emails went buy and in asking about possible trades, turns out Bob needed a pre-73 hood for his backdate project. Happening to have a flawless (I think it was factory new) hood, we struck a deal, one for the other. Shipping a hood is pretty much impossible, Greyhound didn't want to take it, so living in Boston, Bob in Virginia, we met in Jersey for the swap, exchanged a few pleasantries and projects and went home. We both got great parts, but I think the best part is that you get to meet really great people like Bob that you would never otherwise. A pic of Bob with the goods. BTW, thanks Wayne for setting the whole thing up.

I posted that I needed a center cap for 16" wheels. Within an hour the deal was done and I had my cap within 3 days.
I responded to the offer for RSA seats for sale. Deal was made I drove up this weekend and picked up near perfect seats which may have been understated if anything. Two weeks, Two deals, 3 happy Pelicanites.

I'm getting a set of wheels and tires from jlandreth this coming Friday (Fuchs 7x8 15's)
and I've purchased quite a few parts from other Pelicans. A few others have sent me parts that I needed and didn't want any $ for them! This place is a great resource and I'm thankful to have it. Thanks Wayne!!

That's what it's all about. I just have one question, how did Pelican Parts get it's name?

I'm sorry they Wayne's Ferrari has gotten him a reputation. He has less money in that car than most have in their family driver, if it's a new purchase.
That's not what Pelican is about. The rest of the post is spot on. In fact, the Pelican experience helps create a bond between me and the 911, the 911 being sort of a membership card. If not for Pelican and the many I have met at the track and on canyon runs, I probably would have sold the car by now and moved on. I do have other automotive interests, but the Pelican deal kinda keeps me sticking with the 911. Now, the problem is how to add another car while staying in the "club." This can be financially and physically difficult as I have 5 vehicles as it is. But I will figure a way when the right 356 shows up. I don't think the 356 guys are too into the Pelican thing, do you? It's OK, I'll be back to the lone wolf club with that, which is where I came from. |

Good intelligent (for the most part) dialogue, extremely good senses of humor from many. Great service from Pelican, struck several good deals on used with minimal fuss, met a few other Pelicans on business trips. Great advise on things for the pcar that I may not have attempted otherwise, like completely overhauling my A/C myself. People whom I've never met that I believe I can trust (but not with my daughter).

And I completely understand the sentiment. It may show that I've got 4 cars, but they aren't all that nice and mostly all works in process and incredible deals I couldn't pass up; I purposely don't own a home, instead whatever money is saved goes directly into cars. A bit cliché, but these cars are really an addiction. OK, probably more info than necessary

Here's my favorite Pelican made it happen story. Only because it included me! This post is from October 2001:
" And Now, The Rest of the Story! Remember in Mid-October when BK911 wanted to trade his 86 Coupe for an early 911 Targa? He wrote "Anybody want to trade their old 911 for a newer one? You’re in luck! I want to trade an 86 Carrera Coupe for an early 911. I’d prefer a 2.4E Targa, but will consider any 70 – 73 911, Coupe, Targa, T, E or S. Let me know what you have and let’s make a deal!" Well it so happened I had my screaming yellow 72 E which I had finally sorted out the MFI, but was secretly longing for a coupe. What started as a couple of tenative e-mails ended up being about 50 e-mails and as many pictures being sent back and forth. And now, the rest of the story. For those who don't know, I live in mid-Missouri and BK911 lives in Baltimore Maryland. We agreed that a good place to meet would be in Ohio. Naturally I was a bit worried driving my '72 as I had done a bunch of work on it and hadn't really taken it on a long trip. Anyway, at 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning, with every tool I think I might need to rebuild the car on the side of the road, I set off for Ohio. 8 hours later, with absolutely no problems with the car, BK and I meet at a grade school in the small town of Sommerford. It was cold and spitting sleet! We spent about 2 hours driving and inspecting each other's car and freezing! At 5:00 that evening I headed back to Jefferson City behind the wheel of a Guards Red '86 Coupe and BK heads off to Baltimore in my '72. This has to be the most unusual car purchase I have ever made. Oh, the '72 drove flawlessly and made around 23mpg at 80 miles per hour the entire way! Thoughts on the way home: The '72 is all snarling, in your face, brute acceleration while the '86 was a more quiet refined sports car, where the speed is there, but you don't have that wailing engine telling you how fast you are going, but one look at the speedometer lets you know you are breaking the speed limit by about 30mph or so. Anyway thanks to all for you help with my '72 and I look forward to all your help as I tinker a bit on the '86. Guess I need to also change my signature block Kurt V Former 72 911E owner who has gone over to the dark side and is now '86 911 Carerra Owner."

Another Pelican story.
I was planning to buy a new steering wheel (Momo Prototipo) for my SC and a set of golf clubs all from US vendors in order to take advantage of the Euro/Dollar exchange rate. However ordering them from Spain meant customs/import duties + value added tax + shipping charges + a lot of hassle. Since I was visiting the US in a few weeks I asked if any East Coast guy could have my things delivered to his house so I could pick them up. Richard Martinez (RickM in this board) stepped up and offered, not only to have the things delivered to his house, but also brought them to my hotel in NYC (60 miles round trip) and even his father paid for breakfast!!!! We were talking about our cars and his childhood memories of Spain and I promised to send him a pack of a Spanish instant cocoa drink very popular here (Rick, in case you read this, I hope to send the Cola-Cao this week). I couldn't imagine this happening without Pelican!!!! |
