I searched archives, but found no answers so.....I ask now:
Is it normal for a 911 to blow quite a bit of blue smoke on start-up? The facts: I don't drive the car a lot. It will sit a couple of days between starts, but when I do start it dead cold (75 degrees ambient) it poofs out a good shot of blue smoke and then subsides after a couple of seconds. It doesn't smoke (discernably so) when warm started. It doesn't smoke while driving either. I have followed the car and saw nothing. The motor was rebuilt about 4k miles ago. I did the PPI thing and it tested out less than 10% across all six. The p.o. told me that it did it ("they all do-nature of the animal") when I picked the car up, but it is more than I expected. Also, it currently uses Castrol 10/40. I normally run Mobile 1 20/50 in my BMWs. I won't drive it in the winter at all. The lowest temp the car likely will see is 40 degrees. Highest-100 degree. Any recommendations? tia ![]() |

This is not unusual, especially if the car has been sitting for a couple of days. From what I understand, this is due to the flat boxer engine layout.
My '77 does this from time to time too. Although, I find it impossible to predict... sometimes it does it when the car has sat for a couple of days, and other times it's just random. The main thing is, as long as it only lasts a few seconds, then this is considered normal. -MAS

Completely normal. This question, along with "what oil should I use?" comes up at least once a month. Oh and I recommend 20w50 oil instead of 10w40, especially in the summer.

Real thing to look for is what is your oil usage. How many miles before you have to add?

Go w/ the 20W50, observe the correct oil level checking procedure, and drive more often!

The puff is actually related to the color of the car. My '79 is the same color as yours and it regularly indulges in a little puff.

Mine will only smoke on start up for a couple seconds if the last drive was a short trip where she didn't warm up all the way. But if my last trip was a hot cruise, with proper revs and all, then no smoke on cold start.

![]() These cars like to be driven. For example, when I bought my 911 over a year ago, the previous owner had obviously not driven the car that much over the preceding year. I've been driving it now on a daily basis for over a year (and over 20,000 miles)... and it runs much better now than it did when I first bought the car... smoother and more power. Aside from basic stuff, all I have done is DRIVE the thing... lots ![]() -MAS
