915 Transmission Ping

Well this is kind of silly but here goes.

I recently removed my engine and transmission from my early 911 car to d a little painting. They were working just fine when removed. Put everything back hooked all up. Car started fine and shifted fine as before. However after a couple of clutch engagements I hear a little "ping" that sounded like it came from the transmission. The clutch would not disengage now. I adjusted the cable more (pedal is out further) and things were fine again for say another half dozen or so shifts. Then the little "ping" happened again and no disengage unless I adjust the clutch cable further. Which of course by now is at the end of adjustment.

Well is this something as silly as the cable attachment to the pedal is loose or bad or does it sound like something more serious ?

Thanks
David

Could be stretching/breaking wires in the clutch cable. Did you reconnect the transmission to body ground strap after reinstalling the engine and transmission? Jim

Jim -
Well no I did not since I have solid motor mounts, how does that affect the problem ? But that is one of the differences between before and after.

year of car? sounds like the cable failing. sometimes the cable tube that's welded inside the tunnel breaks loose, or the firewall cracks at the rear end of the tube.

A poor ground can send the starter current through the clutch cable, heating it, ruining the temper and leading to wire breakage. Jim

It is a fairly new cable, but I will attach the ground and put on a new cable. Thanks
