newbie shifter questions
Did an archive search and this time found TOO much info. My question is-
Shifting my 77 911s from 1st to second basically sucks. It feels as though I have to pull the shifter up and back at the end of the travel to fully engage second. I drove an 87 carrera that seemed about the same, indicating to me a couple of things: 1-this is normal-live with it. or 2-this is a normal wear issue-fix it. So learned readers-which is it? Btw-I consulted the 101 ways to spend money book and it didn't really touch on these exact symptoms-just how to rebuild/upgrade. |
Shift coupler bushings may be worn out or it may just require adjustment. Do a search on the topic. A pause in neutral between gears is required with these transmissions; they should not be speed shifted.

I think an adjustment would be needed if all gears were doing the same thing.
On my 911 (80SC), second is a bit hard to pull into for me but my mechanic thinks it works fine. You just can't cram it into second, it has to be done with finesse. Anyone else? |
If the shifter is adjusted correctly, it's probably synchro wear. 2nd gear synchro is the most used and thus wears faster than the others. If you're not the original owner, the PO wasn't double clutching often enough (or at all) to minimize wear.

I had a '77 for 15 years. I never had a thing done to the tranny. Too fast into 2nd and it ground a bit. A pause or dbbl clutch is the answer.
But, you shouldn't have to pull up on anything. I'd have a look at the bushing in the tunnel. |
