Here's some of my speed shots:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...2/IMG_2484.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...1/IMG_2362.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...1/IMG_2434.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4.../Kemora057.jpg In addition to motion blur also the body roll and some dust in the air can give you the impression of speed. This definitely does not look like a parked car ;) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...5/94e54d7d.jpg Check out this Finnish site: http://www.carfreaks.net/ Those guys really seem to know how to use their cameras! And there's even some Porsche pictures. |
SWEET Janne! What camera, lens, film, settings etc were you using to take those pics?
I also wonder how the film guys get their pics scanned. I can't yet afford a high quality digicam. So I am still using 35mm film and the scans I get (even from the pro shop) are mediocre at best. My slide film prints are good but the scans always seem to lose some of the color saturation and clarity. Should I maybe buy my own scanner? Hmmm...or maybe that would cost as much as a digital camera. |
Janus.
The camera is Canon Powershot S1 IS. It's a quite inexpensive 3 megapixel digicam with 10x zoom and image stabilizer. I used an automatic "motion blur" mode. It's basically a normal "AUTO" mode but with slower shutter speed. |

Well, it has been just two months shy of two years since I started this tread. And so after shooting God knows how many rolls of film and taking in all of the advice you guys have given me, I went to Limerock last weekend and I feel like I am really making some progress...so here is what difference a few years of Pelican advice can make...
August, 2004 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1149206200.jpg May, 2006 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1148841810.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1148841827.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1148842322.jpg The red car is actually a bit out of focus and kind of flat. But I threw it in there because it is Wolf Henzler's car. :) Honestly, everything I've learned about photography has been learned from you guys on this thread (and the James Mann book which was recommended on this thread). I shot those pics using 100 speed film with a polarizing filter and panning over a relatively slow section of the course. So the cars appear to be going faster than they really were. I opted against slide film this time because I figured the cars would be plenty colorful on their own. So no enhancement would be required. I also stood relatively far from the action and used a big honkin' zoom to get in close. I think that may have actually helped since it meant I was moving the camera less to get the shots. So I can't thank you guys enough. Where else could I have gotten such good advice? SmileWavy |

I'm jumping in here pretty late. First, your shots are looking a LOT better as I scroll through the entire thread. Since you're shooting with a Nikon, you MUST check out www.nikonians.org. You will learn more than you can imagine on this site. Also, unless you're totally opposed to digital, I'd make the switch. I moved over last year and since I'm no longer worried about screwing up expensive film, I shoot a lot more. A lot doesn't work out but I learn from every mistake. Here's a couple of shots I took at this year's 100 Acre Wood Rally in Missouri. The 911 is a bit soft but I'm really proud of the Subaru shot. They were shot handheld with a Nikon D-70 and a 70-300 f4-5.6 lens at 300mm. Shutter speed was around 1/500.

E30Mracer...cool pics. I have pictures of all the same F1 cars Tyrell's, JPS, Leyland when they were racing in the 70's and early 80's. Keep up the good work.

Thank you kycarguy. It was raining all weekend long so most shots are rather gray but some came out great too. They are all pretty large and i got to make them smaller to post here which is a pain.
I am lucky to see these vintage F1 cars on the track! Pretty rare occasion these days. If you can, post those photos - would love to see it! |
