Strange steering issue with bump steer kit.

Hello all,

I recently added a bump-steer kit to my 80SC. No more bump steer, however, I get a strange *tick* feel when I turn the wheel 1/2 turn in either direction. It doesn't seem like there is any play in the steering, but rather something may be rubbing. Any ideas?

Thanks much!

Did you loosen the U-joints all along the steering column?

I found just loosening the one near the rack was not enough.

I loosened and re-centered the U-joint above it.

Same problem with my upgrade. The problem, I believe, is caused by too much pressure on the steering linkage from the rack up to the steering wheel. There is a yoke and a pinch-bolt connecting the steering components together that needs adjustment. They are accessible via the smuggler's boot. The shaft pinch bolt needs to be loosened, along with the yoke, the shaft moved upward to provide pressure relief and then the yoke re-tightened. I tried to adjust mine but was not able to. Hope it helps.

Thanks nhromyak,

Yes, I loosened the one under the smugglers box, but NOT
the one at the rack. The instructions indicated to only do the one. Should I do the other one? Perhaps I should loosen the one on the steering column and driver her aroound the block to make sure it's adjusted properly.

cheers

I found I had to adjust both sides of the U-joint and both U-joints. Then due to the angles involved, I had to center the U-joint on both steering shafts, so each shaft is on the U-joint the same amount.

i am experiencing this same deal. last night i loosened the u joints in the smugglers box and drove around a bit to settle things as described in this and other threads on the subject. no relief.

the "click" is right off center from strait ahead, more noticable left than to the right.. it seems to go away as speed increases, in hard cornering its seems nonexistent.

i could not get to the upper u joints due to ducting and heat components in the way. can i get to it through the drivers side foot well some how?

additionally in the picture attached is the suggestions in above posts to loosen parts 23-26 for further relief?

C:\WINNT\Profiles\tfernandez\Desktop\4-3.jpg

the guy at the alignment shop said there was wear in my steering rack from a lowered car w/o a bump steer kit installed previously. the car has 75k on it, could this worn rack be the case after a lower, no BS kit, or was his story the BS?

and lastly could i grease the steering rack w/o F'ing up my less than week old alignment?

thank you for input
