What might my car be worth?

In a flight of fancy, I am thinking of selling my car. Maybe I will come back to my senses and keep it, who knows. Anyone have any idea what my baby may be worth. Thanks for any tips, ideas, flames (ha ha), etc.

1985 Porsche Carrera, Coupe, European model
Mileage = 157,000
Condition = Very Good to Excellent
Stock HP = 231 (higher compression pistons)
Estimated current HP = 240
Exterior Color = Prussian Blue
Interior Color = Tan Leather

With the exception of some normal small dings and paint chips, this car is 100% ready to drive: use as a daily commuter car, or take it to the next level and race prepare. I bought the car knowing that these engines can 300,000 miles and still run strong; My goal was to buy a car where someone already had the engine out once and replaced the major items: Transmission, Clutch, and Oil return tubes. My original intention was to Auto-X and maybe time trial the car, but with work, and kids, I have found that I need an SUV. It is dificult to split the money I have between the car, the bicycles, and my other hobbies - motocross riding, and surfing. Anything that may have been an issue with the body or the engine has been repaired. The only two things which come to mind that I have been unable to get to are the Oil Pressure Sender unit may be bad, and the sunroof just broke one cable, and I don't have the money to fix it.

Bottom Line - this car pulls, runs strong (if not stronger than some cars with lower miles on them), and sounds great. Loveingly cared for by me. I actually just got a great comment from the old-timer who lives around the corner from me when we were having coffee in the downtown area the other day. He said "do you have so and so at XYZ Motor Werks tune up your car - it sounds great, better than some of these other cars which don't seem to be running very well".

Hey Bill,

For what it's worth, I picked up my '87 in similar condition, although the transmission is not rebuilt. However, mine had the top end done at about 115k. So all in all, a relatively close comparison. I got it for $15k. I probably could have held out longer for a lower mile model, or possibly not. For me, I am happy that it is a solid driver and I get to enjoy it without being worried about driving it - A LOT

Take it for what it's worth, seems like a tough market when you are selling right now.....

Hey, where do you ride?? I ride nearly every weekend in the winter (perfect compliment to the P car summers) and am always looking for new places / people to ride with. PM me if you want to talk that over more.

Good luck whatever you decide.

-Chris

Hey Bill - having just sold my 1987 Carrera with 119K for 16.9K I would estimate maybe 15K for your car. My car had a fresh suspension, newly refurbished AC and was in very good cosmetic condition. Until we see some improvement in the Bay Area economy it is a bit of a buyers' market here.

With all due respect, I think the '87's described above are worth more....I'm looking at an '89 with 119,000 that's quite nice for 16.5....Your '85 sounds great, but I'd put it at 14K

Why does a Euro model have a "Cat bypass pipe"? Is it really a "Mod" or are oyu refering to the stock peice on the Euro?

Bill - sorry I can't help you on the value of your P-Car.

Chris,

I live in San Leandro and ride both mountain and road bikes. (mostly road, though) I do a lot of riding and if your looking for some new rides to do, I would be glad to go out with you. I usually like to do 40 to 80 mile rides with a fair amount of climbing. Have you ever ridden Mines Rd. Great ride with little traffic. 60-miles round trip from Livermore Library complex.......email me if your interested:

Thank you everyone for the comments.

cbeers, I just started riding more this summer, after a diet re-work, and a new serious workout schedule (weights) - I have almost dropped 20 Lbs!!! I usually ride up Edgewood Road in San Carlos, and then bike as far as I can go on Canada road towards Palo Alto.

bigrubberjeep, the car had a Cat on it when I bought it since it had to be "federalized" B4 it could be driven in the US. So in a way it is bringing it back to stock, but the part that has been added is the Dansk Euro premuffler that was talked about on the BBS a few months back, not the original Porsche pre-muffler.

Oh yeah , I forgot to add that it does have a new compressor, with cold A/C.

Off topic, but important: if you guys do ANY riding at night please go get some reflective gear and a headlight. On one of my extreme few night rides about 3 weeks ago I was hit by a driver making an illegal left turn coming at me head on. I am now stuck in a wheel chair for 6 weeks and have a fractured pelvis, so please, if you're going to ride even just at dusk, get some of that highly reflective tape for your bike/bars/helmet and wear a reflective vest.

Wow - Hope you feel better soon. (I'll stick to the indoor gym)

I think 14k will rid you of the car easily. Anything over 15 will be tougher. The Euro is a bit MINUS in most people's book. And in many of the buyer's guides also, e.g. Leffingwell ...

But hey, 14k, that will buy you some nice wheels on your Escalade.

Clarification - I ride dirt motorcycles (CR-500).

Thanks for the offers to pedal though guys, I used to be into that too, but now am getting lazy and am a hill climbing / speed addict

I'm sorry to hear that, klauke. I have a nice big scar on my left arm from a driver who took an illegal right turn. Mine was in broad daylight, though. Best Wishes!
