Caption for the first picture might be: Hmmmmmmmm, now which car should I take to dinner tonight?
![]() Can't recall right now but did Jacky and company win it in '84?

Great shots! Thanks for posting!
I'm curious, though -- do you know the story behind the last shot? I mean, that looks like it's halfway through the race, and they've got two cars torn apart, with a driver resting in a Recaro on the desert sands? I love the shot, but I don't understand. ??? Dan

Dan,
They were undoubtedly waiting for the support trucks & crew to arrive! Those were the days of the HUGE support trucks -- straight out of Star Wars ... literally, APCs without armor or weapons, and capable of sustained speeds above 90 mph in their own right!

Thanks, Warren; I figured it was something like that. It's a classic shot, for sure.
Say, if the support trucks can do sustained 90, and can carry lots of spare parts, why not just run the P-D in one of them? ![]() Dan

If I remember right they did race in a separate category.

They did race the big trucks but I'm not sure if they do anymore. There's a modelmaker who specializes in these:

The 'Big Support Truck' races were discontinued after several spectacular fatal accidents involving both two of the 'biggies,' as well as several unfortunate smaller vehicles, including spectators ...
It seems that visibility was a real problem during sandstorms or other 'weather conditions,' and stopping that many tons at hyperspeed was hard, if not impossible in time to avoid accidents ... sort of like our 18-wheeler speeding/safety problem on Interstates!!! Basic laws of physics can't be repealed for racing, or for the jerks out there trying to make a delivery 'on schedule!'

Note the side view of the '84 car.....hmmm...rear Carrera spoiler with no front spoiler to "balance" the car out...
Tsk, tsk....from Porsche nonetheless.... ![]() ![]() ---Wil

For the models, go to www.grandprixmodels.com and I think there's a pull-down menu with Raid Rally cars on it. Those are 1:43 scale and handbuilt so they are most likely $200+ .
Shawn - I don't have any bigger images of these photos. ![]() Wil - for ground clearance I'm sure, but it does make you wonder how the handling would be at high-speed. ![]() |

Yep...they did hit 120 mph or more at times...a stock "rubber" front lip ought to be the ticket....even here where it can get whacked ....
