Locating a vacuum leak
My Carrera is idling correctly for about 1 minute and then it drops below 800rpm. I recall some time ago reading on this BB that one way to locate a vacuum leak is to spray something on the hoses while the engine is running. Can anyone tell me what that was?

Starting fluid is what I have used to find a vacuum leak.

To really pinpoint the leak, you need to have a fine nozzle at the end of your devise. Just spraying widely, will not tell you the exact location of the leak. It could be hoses, intake gaskets, airbox, etc. Tighten all the clamps on the hoses, especially the breather hose both ends.

If you search you will find a lot of discussion on the use of propane.

starter fluid is flammable big time. not a good idea!
carreras typically suck in a lower intake gasket, or the hose comes off the regulator at the RF corner of the engine, or a hose comes off the forward side of the throttle body. the intake gasket problem is usually diagnosed by finding a cylinder that is not working at idle. pull off the injector plug or a sparkplug connector and no change. good compression, gets fuel and spark, but doesn't work at idle.

The hose came off the side of the oil filler pipe. When the engine lid is closed, the a/c condensor hose pushes down on the vacuum hose connected to the oil filler pipe, and if it is not clamped down tightly, it eventually gets pushed off the pipe connector lip. Removing the oil filler cap, to see if the idle dropped, it was easily visible.

Good for you. Now ged rid of the A/C, extra blower fan, and cruise control. Less weight and more room. Cheers.
