Sorry Targa Guys
I have a 1981SC coupe, when looking for my first P-Car I knew I wanted an SC I must have driven 10 of them 80% were Targa's (maybe because I live in California) not as many coupes, but every Targa I drove one thing always stood out, noise I'm not saying coupes are'nt noisey but Targas on the Freeway deafening. I even drove a conversion to a convertible owner said it was done in L.A. even worse, I think the Targa looks better without a tail on it, it was designed more for touring than track. Porsche is the best sports car in the world. This comment does not reflect anyone elses opioion but my own.

I prefer coupes as well but I don't feel it necessary to tell everyone that...........

Sold my '68 coupe' and bought a 73.5 Targa.....Cars like these all all about having the top off on a nice day...Noise, I either listen to the wind or her in the seat beside me - sometimes I prefer the wind.....

My '82 Targa was loud too, until I had the foam sound barrier replaced while the engine/tranny were out (the old one was gonzo). Made a HUGE difference.
And totally agree with the roof off concept. But much quieter during rare roof on moments. Drive on ! - Doug

Targa's are loud if the top and weather stripping are in less than ideal shape. When everything is right the noise is not really much different than a coupe. Most people neglect the top and weather stripping in used cars. Besides, in Cali I didn't think you were supposed to drive with the top on??

I love the Targa top, it's the best of both worlds.
I love the shape of the coupe though. But in the end there is more fun in a targa. Plus, noise and wind is what it's all about. I'm a music guy, and run a record label that puts out hip-hop music but to tell you the truth, I just turn the stereo off and drive!

Can somebody set up a separate 'opinion' forum. And while they're at it, how about a 'what's it worth' forum as well....and an 'oooh look at this picture of my car' forum.

What?

I prefer the skyblue headliner of my cab and as far as noise is concerned, it's not nearly loud enough for me!

I agree with the posters that mentioned having the top properly aligned. My '72E targa was not all that noisy at highway speeds.

Targa's are noisy -- at least all the old one's I've been in are. Mine has had new rubber put in all around and I had the top recovered. Probably should have it rebuilt sometime --
With the top on, the wind noise is pretty apparent -- but you can still hear that remarkable SC engine. Mine has no tail, so it's a clean sweep from nose to license plate . . . Cheers! C. |

If you live in Cali, buy a targa....
If you want quiet, buy a Buick....

Targas and cabs are made for open top driving
It's obvious (to me) that a car with a soft removable roof will be noisier than a similar car with a fixed metal roof. If you want a roof, or for some reason think a targa is too noisy, buy a coupé.
